Supercab/bronco idea. Questions and pic request inside
After a Baja run with a bunch of bronco buddies
I'm considering doing this to my '74 supercab.
But it will be turned into a "bronco" like the desert trucks pictured above. I will have a factory hard top and 35's with a more reasonable ride height (for desert use) than the orange one above. It will keep the ride height shown below, but I will shorten up the wheel base a bit (I'm thinking I'll put it on a standard cab, long bed frame for the 133" wheel base).
Anyways the pic above is the only pic I've ever seen of a "supercab bronco" and I'm wondering if anybody else has any more pics? I'd like to see a more up close pic of how the part of the bronco cab where the "shell/cap" attaches blends into the roof.
I've collected a bunch of pics of "4 door broncos" using the 73-79 trucks but the body alignment with those seems easier since you can use the rear door of the crew cab as a guide for the placement of the bronco back half.
Also does anybody know offhand if the roofline where the "shell/cap" attaches is the same on the 80's-90's broncos and then the 78/79? Also are the tailgates the same?
I'm looking at using fiberglass bedsides on the thing so all the body that would really show from the bronco is the section above the bedside that wraps up and over the roof (where the shell attaches) and then the tailgate.

I have spent alot of time reading your threads Chase, and I understand completely what your goals are. Screw the pics, start cutting. Grafting the rear section of the Bronco ont the back of the super cab would be fairly easy since the body lines will match up almost identically. Hell, I wish you werent a half a country away from me. That is a project I could get behind lending a hand on.

This is nothing more than a little cutting and splicing. Nothing that hasn't been done before.
If you've got some time to kill - have a look here. Don't mind the pics on the 1st couple of pages as I started this thread before FTE allowed uses to edit their posts - so I couldn't fix the pic links...

Didnt someone on the site make that orange supercab bronco. I remember when I first started reading this site about 8 years ago when I first got my dent, and seeing the build thread for that truck. I recall a ton of pics for the fab work, might be alot of searching to find it if you even can. I do know whatever you build chase will be of the highest quality, your stuff amazes me.

Haven't had time to look up old posts on this yet but I will Monday I think. Until then...
So I was at the shop last night and I dawned on my I had a scrap pile of what used to be an '87 bronco since my buddy still hadn't taken the load to recycling yet. I cut a bit more off this bronco hunk and held it up to my supercab (still not cut well enough to fit right obviously, but this was a quick test). I was wondering if I might be able to get away with a 80+ donor for the bronco half since I can run a 778/79 tailgate on it and only this section above the bedside would show due to fiberglass bedsides. Looks as if I might need a 78/79 donor to make is a smooth blend from the supbercab to the shell connection part on the bronco. It looks almost doable from the side but you can see the cab angle difference in the 3rd pic.
*edit*
based on this picture it looks like the 78/79 top of bronco cab leans forward a bit more to meet the slant at the back of the door. It's seeming more and more like i need to use a 78/79 bronco to do this "right"

So I've been thinking about this more again (thinking only as I still need to finish the crew before I even look at this), after talking with a buddy this weekend who will be doing this same type swap. He's using an 87 bronco & 97 F-250 & he told me the thing will end up with a 125" to 130" wheel base depending on how/where he cuts it.
That got me thinking a little on what frame I would use. I'm not a fan of splicing/lengthening frames so I'd try & make a stock type frame work. I am ok with cutting a bit off the back of a factory frame...
To do a little more research I just tried to PM & email bandit99 asking for pics & info.
I'm also asking a buddy with a 79 bronco for a few measurements to help my figuring.

[IMG][/IMG]I am sure you could make the graft and make it look good with your skills Steve. What seems ironic to me is that I have been pondering the same project over the last couple days. Since I have a 74 High Boy crew I am currently working on and looking for a 6bt for it seems real ironic as you are getting close to finishing up yours. If we both did it we would have 2 similar trucks. This is the look I am currently trying to attain with my crew. I have an 88 Bronco and for wheelin its a cool truck but for faster driving the short wheelbase sucks. I hit some bumps on the 134 e merging to the 210 W and the tires just chattered on the pavement and kicked the rear end over at about 70 mph and myself and everyone driving close to me had a rude awakening. This is what has got me thinking about lengthening a Bronco with a piece from a supercab. Not to mention if you can find a 74 or 73 Highboy frame that you would be Cali smog exempt and could run the divorced 205 t case. In my opinion for faster driving I think it would handle much better. I've seen a bunch of the 4 door ones & while I do like them the wheel base is too long to do well in the desert (what this truck would be set up for) from what I can tell.
If I remember right the 4 door bronco wheel base is about 142" or so.
I want to keep mine at 133" (standard cab, long bed length) or shorter.
As you found out - broncos are a bit short in the wheel base department. Because of this and the fact that none of the bigger ones are smog exempt I've stayed away from them. I do really dig them though & I think a supercab-bronco would be SWEET!
