Changing engine size in 1961 F100
I have a 1961 F100 that needs a new engine and clutch. Is it possible to replace the 292 with a 312 engine without any modification or major changes? Also where can I purchase the new engine, what websites, stores etc. would be a good source for finding a new engine? Can I upgrade to a 4 barrel carb instead of a 2 barrel? I will replace the clutch at the same time - where can I find one that will work for this truck? Thank you for your time.

In this situation, since the Y-block Ford has not been produced in a gazillion years getting a used running engine could be a big gamble, unless it is a reputable shop that either built it, or knows who built it. Good machine shops can be hard to come by. Especially those that know the ins and outs of a Y-Block Ford. If you take yours to a good shop that is familiar with Y-Block Fords you really can't go wrong. It will probably be more expensive up front, but a good rebuild, taken care of with proper maintenance can be well worth it. Not sure what part of the country you're in, but there is a shop in Englewood, Colorado (Denver area) that does phenomenal work, and the owner/machinist knows every Ford motor like the back of his hand.

Finding a 312 is going to be the tough part. These were used in T-birds and cars. Dimensionally they are the same as your 292 (and 272) so the swap would be easy. Check around on Ebay and Craigslist, maybe Hemmings Motor News. Like the above post said, when buying a used or rebuilt engine, do everything possible to make sure the source is reputable.

I have not looked in a while but I sold a 57 312 ecz main cap proper and verified engine. It was torn down and in excellent condition only needing gaskets, rings, bearings. it went for 925 on ebay. I could not believe it went that high.I kind of wish I has reassembled it and put it back in my truck....
