Gear selector and 4x4 motor
Okay the 99 f250 s/d again..... I have the shift on the fly and it shifts into 4x4 high and I can hear it shift with the engine off and when i kick it into 4x4 low.. nothing and the light does not say "Low Range" just stays on 4x4. So is my motor bad? Whats the issue?
Second problem. It is an automatic and the gear selector shifts hard. It is stiff and does not really click into each selection. It kinda feels like someone put chewing gum in the assembly some where..... I read up on it and I tried tightening the bolts that hold that assembly together, but they were already tight. So how does that selector work and whats wrong???
Thanks for the input.

I have the same problem with the gear selector. It has been this way for 2 years and no one seems to know what causes it. It shifts easy when cold but after things warm up then it shifts stiffer. Especially notice this when plowing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way mine is an 01 250 cc 4x4 V10. It was this way when I bought it two years ago.

I can't help with the shift selector. Something is hanging up or dry and needs lube, but I have a manual so I'm not very familiar with them.
In order to shift into 4 Low, you have to have your foot on the brake enough to activate the brake switch, and the transmission in neutral (automatic) or the clutch fully depressed (manual) and moving less the 3 MPH. If those conditions are not met, the module will not attempt to move the shift motor.
I've found with mine that sometimes it will refuse to shift unless I get it to roll just a little bit.
Since you're getting into and out of 4 high, all your relays and the shift motor are working. 4 low is just one more turn of the motor.
