Need help getting a '91 7.3 IDI running

The engine cranks, batteries are good. Truck has been setting for over a year. Won't hit on ether. Doesn't seem to be getting fuel. Tried bleeding the lines. I'm unsure if I did it right. I filled or primed the fuel filter. Please keep in mind I'm ignorant concerning a diesel. I'm not a mechanic. Not sure what to do next

First off Mike, welcome to the forum.
Do you get any smoke from the tail pipe when cranking? Does the Amp gauge draw down for around 15 seconds when the key is first turned to the run position?
To check to see if you are getting fuel to the fuel filter remove the core from the schrader valve on the filter head. It is the tire stem looking thing. Place a hose over the end of the schrader valve and run it into a container. Crank the engine over for 15 seconds. You should get 1/3 of a pint of fuel out of the valve. If you don't get fuel from there, the lift pump could be shot. It is not to bad to change out, it is on the front, passenger side of the motor. It looks like a fuel pump on an old gasser. Another thing, how much fuel is in the tank? The rubber extension on the fuel pickup in the tanks have a tendicy to rot off letting the pickup tube suck air at around 1/4 mark on the gauge.

First, thankyou for posting a reply to this and for the welcome. I've been trying to figure this out for a few weeks. I do not get smoke from the tail pipe when cranking. The Amp gauge does draw down, and once the wait to start light goes off I hear clicking in the engine compartment....I assume that's the relays and glow plugs, but I know what happens when you assume. I cracked open the fuel line into the fuel filter and cranked the engine 4 times for about 10 seconds each time. I did that earlier. I didn't get any fuel out. It's dark now, so I'll have to try the rest tomorrow. I'll also put more fuel in the tank. I only have six gallons in it now. I'll keep you updated.

Mike

on top of the ip,right in the center is a wire plug.this solenoid is the fuel shutoff.unplug that and plug it back on with the key in the on position.you'll hear it click pretty loud.if it doesn't get out the meter to test just in case before replacing.
sounds like she isn't working.

Ok...I couldn't wait. I went out with a flashlight and looked at the injection pump. I have two cables coming out of it on the top right, but not one in the center. The cables have plastic connectors to plug into the injection pump. That's IF I'm looking at the right thing. The gas lines to the injectors run out of it to the engine.

The amp gauge stays pretty well the same (kinda low) until the glow plugs warm and it starts clicking. Once it starts clicking the amp gauge drops with every click

you said you removed the fuel line going INTO the fuel filter, cranked the engine, and go no fuel to the filter?
if this is the case, either
A: there is no fuel in the tank.
B: the fuel pickup in the tank is cracked and it is sucking air.
C: the fuel pump on the side of the block is bad.
D: the fuel line between the tank and pump is bad and sucking air.

It sounds like the glow plugs are working by the way the amp gauge is acting. No smoke from the tail pipe says no fuel. Tom has listed the reasons for no fuel to the filter in the post above. The easyest check is to fill the tank at least 1/2 full, then crank it over to see if you get fuel to the filter. Another thaught, do you have 2 tanks on the truck, and does the fuel gauge move when you switch tanks? I have had the fuse blow that runs the fuel gauge, and it also powers the selinoid that switches tanks.

I do have 2 tanks. I checked the fuse and it's good, and the fuel gauge does move and then goes back to empty. I didn't get to it today, so tomorrow I'm going to put a few more gallons in the tank. I'm putting all the fuel in the front tank. Is that the right one to be filling? The fuel gauge showed full until I put some fuel in it. Then it dropped close to empty. I'll still be putting about 10 more gallons in it. I don't know what a lot of the wiring is. I have cut cables by the fuse box under the dash. The truck cranks, so I'm hoping it's nothing but a bypass or something the earlier owner had wired in that he took out.
