Need help picking out EGR and OIL cooler please

Hi again guys, I had made a thread before when I was getting all the stuff out to the manifold, basically I had a busted EGR cooler.

I call the nice people at bulletproofdiesel.com, and they said what I expected them to say: bad oil cooler causes bad EGR and soon many problems with turbo, injectors, and the head gaskets. I'm sure of it.

Here is my original thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...the-turbo.html

Okay, so I am aware I need to replace the oil cooler if I want to keep this truck. Is there a way to clean it up first of all? Any filter I can install to keep it cleaner? I read in some thread there is a coolant filter I can install to help it keep clean.

So which EGR cooler and oil cooler can you recommend? The bulletproofdiesel.com associate said that I can either get a stock cooler or a very expensive upgraded one, and for a stock egr/delete and cooler with all the gaskets and turbo bolts it comes down to $800.

I'd rather not have to replace the oil cooler if I can clean it up and put it back, and do an EGR delete.

Thank you in advance!

what year is your truck

did you get a egr deleate yet

Id just go with the stock oil cooler there fine as long as you get a coolant filter going and flush the system clean

get a coolant filter

and then depending on your year and what you decide about the egr stuff

The truck is 2004, I have not gotten the EGR delete yet, but the EGR is the square one. I can either get the y pipe replacement, or go with the blocked off EGR for the delete like Bullet Proof sells them.

Do I need to replace the OIL cooler, or is there a way to open it up and clean it?

What coolant filter do you recommend, and where does it go?

Thank you for your reply, reps for you!

thanks for the reps

how do you know you need a new oil cooler ECT vs EOT spread more than 15* apart???
Do you have gauges??

with the square egr cooler they suck you can deleate it or get one from BPD
If you deleate it you may need a tunn er to get rid of the cel
have you tried to drive it with the egr valve unplugged to see if it pops the light on
be careful with egr unplugged it compleats the circut to the fan
You may just want a BPD egr cooler if you dont want to deal with a tunner
just decide what works best for you
theres nothing to fail if its gone though IDK

theres no really good way to clean the oil cooler parts guy ed has em for around 200.00$$
I recomend just changing it out if your going in to the egr cooler anyway

If youplaning on doing the work theres some pics in my profile pic album you can check oput give you an Idea how far your going in
Its not to bad a job

If it's in your means, get the full bulletproof kit.

Oh no no no, I can't afford that. I'll go with a delete kit and a cooler only, I got the green light from my dad!

it might be easier for you if you just order a coolant filter kit

but really its not hard either way

I think the hardest part of the home made kit is tthe filter mount

and thats about how far in you will have to go to egr cooler and oil cooler rebuild in the last pic

check my albums in profile theres a bunch more pic

I bought the Defuser($129.00) kit because it came with three filters and the ball valves.

Exy, I am sure that you will be very happy with the BPD kit that you are getting. Did you also order the new improved turbo oil drain from them? Your right there, you might as well replace it. If you have never done one before, take your time and keep us posted if you have questions. Other items for possible overhaul would be IPR kit, about $80 from Ford and an EGR valve kit.

Looks like a great kit you have there

Id really reconsider a coolant filter now since you already plugged one oil cooler up you dont want to have to do this again
there have been a couple others that have plugged a new oil cooler

and GIve it a gooood flush before you put the truck under the knife

take some pics

Post a new thread when you get going lots of great tips

Whoa, what is an IPR kit??? And I'm gonna place an order for the oil drain and the oil hose to the turbo pretty soon, I heard the stock one is a turd!

From what the technician at BFD.com told me on the phone, it is the oil that plugs up the oil cooler, not the coolant, so what I'm thinking is replace oil filter sooner? Is there a bypass filtering kit anywhere that I can install so I can have 2 filters? I don't want to sound like an idiot, I'm just still not 100% on what options I have on the truck.

It is the coolant side that gets clogged up not the oil side. To protect your investment you should get a coolant filter.
