I think the best description for the "mystery nut" would be Bulkhead fitting.

Thanks for adding to the discussion. I actually gave up on working on replacing my hoses for the time being... still waiting to be installed... might just happen this Thanksgiving when I replace my front shocks and front rotors/pads. My brake system needs a good flush right now anyway.
