Well made it to Ohio and back....but.
Hi All,
Again thanks to all on this board who helped with my tranny issue of pump seal, tranny cooler and TransGo tugger install.
Truck towed great and shifted great despite internal codes of P1728 and P0781 and OD light did not come on the whole way.
All was fine until we left on Sunday and were about 100 miles into our 500 mile tow back to NJ when all of a sudden the battery light starts to flicker. I was like this is great, I have a truck and trailer and car and three other people in my truck and don't need a breakdown on the Ohio or PA pike.
We pull over into rest area and because I bought tools with me we put volt meter on both batteries and they are at 14 volts, do same to alternator and shows 14 volts.
So we take off and light stays off until we are about 250 miles away from NJ and then it comes on and stays on, volt meter factory gauge was right in middle and moved slightly downward as we got into NJ.
I drop off buddys car and my passengers and drive the 10 miles to my home and as I backing truck and trailer into driveway the volt guage moves way down to below safe section and truck is having a hard time.
It is probably a bad alternator or diode, I am charging batterys and will get it to my buddys shop in the AM.
It sucks having no service records on this truck as I have no idea how old that alternator is.
Dare I ask what a new alternator goes for on these things??
Thanks again to everyone here for your help it is much appreciated.
Rich

Been there, done that....
Just run to Autozone and get yourself a Duralast Gold. You'll pay a little under $200 again, but it'll be the last time you have to do it. IF it craps out again, just wander over to Autozone and get yourself a free new one. It's easy enough to change right there in the parking lot.

Mine is charging fine, but has this huge crack in the housing, so I would liek to change it at some point.
