F250 6.4L whine and little power

Okay, so here it is:
Ocassionally, when I have started my truck, idled for a few minutes and started to drive off, I have heard a whine and noticed that there is NO pressure from the turbo indicated on the instrument panel. The problem seems to correct itself after going slow (~15 MPH) for a about 30 sec to ~ 1 minute, pressure comes up and the whine goes away. It has only done this about 6 times in the last 8 months.
It does not seem to be weather related as the truck has done this in both cold weather and now in this scorching heat/humidity. I have mentioned this to the tech at FORD and he says he has never heard of this problem.
Has anyone ever heard of this and what can I do to correct it? Should I let the truck idle longer before driving? Please note that one one occassion, the truck sat at idle for almost 5 minutes and it still did this.

No problem.

These folks are great. Someone will be by in a little while to help you out.

As an aside, if you haven't already, drop by the Virginia Chapter and post in the Virginia Roll Call thread. We've also got an August BS thread going. It's a monthly thing for FTE members to join together and shoot the bull.

Now, back to your issue with the truck.

That's strange...so you aren't getting any boost? What happens if you give it some throttle? Could be a turbo problem, and these should be fixed ASAP to avoid plugging the DPF through overfueling.

How many miles are on the truck? Still under warranty? Has it been checked out by a dealer? Any trouble codes? CEL?

I have similar symptoms - loud "fan" noise and a loss of power, but plenty of revs from the engine.

It's not related to temperature or load. Happens from a cold start or after miles of driving. Once it happened while pulling a heavy hill with a trailer - basically stopping me in my tracks.

It feels like it's the transmission slipping badly. In my case, a few seconds or little change in throttle will cause the noise to go away and the power to return.

Checked the transmission fluid level - all okay.

Very strange....

I would suggest pull the air cleaner and have a look inside the air tube. See if it is nice and clean or oiled. Look at all the fittings and see if you can see anything wrong.

Look at the turbo actuator. If you just turn the key to the on position does it cycle?

Your subject says no power; but your description says no boost, so what I am offering may have nothing to do with your problem.

The common term is whine though....

Maybe air in your fuel coolant system?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...oler-pump.html

Maybe read the link above to see if anything in common.

Good luck.

I too have had this exact same thing happen a few times (like 3) in the last year. Always on startup, and quickly goes away after about 30 seconds or turning on and off the truck....

It did the same thing again Monday morning. It was an audible whine and I noted the turbo press at ~10 psi. I maintained speed (~15 mph) for about 30 sec and it slowly went away and the truck regained power and sped up. I have mentioned it to the dealer, but the service rep has not heard of this before. I have 32K miles on it.

It after thinking about the problem and the symptoms, it seems to be a issue with the torque converter. Like when air gets into a pump, the transmission makes a lot of noise, but no power is being transferred to the wheels.

As noted in my original question, I can pull over and shift to neutral, wait a few seconds, then drop it into gear and all is good again.

It must be a transmission issue.

The transmission fluid is still factory original, but the truck only has 28,000 miles on it (she's my weekend/vacation hauler). I checked the level after the last time it occured and it looks fine.

It's puzzling.

I may change the fluid just to eliminate it from any possibility before the next long haul.
