dual gas tank question

Hello folks, a brand new member, I just hauled home a 67 F250 camper special and have been cleaning this rascal out. I have a question about dual fuel tanks.
On the dash on the lower left is an electric swith for front and rear tanks, It has a manual tank selector switch on the floorboard.
Can you guys tell me is this how the factory set these year trucks up? or most likley someone has modifed the fuel system.
There are not any solinoids near where the fuel line come from the tanks which why I wonder if this was perhaps a factory setup.

Thanks in advance
Randy Jones

The switch is for the fuel gauge and the selector valve is to select the tank you want to draw fuel from. This was a factory setup when both the in cab tank and the aux tank between the frame rails were both installed. Search the forums and you should be able to find more info.

1967/74's use the manual selector valve on the floor for the dual tanks, a switch on the dash for the fuel gauge.

1975/79's have a selector valve and solenoid assy. The switch (located within the heater control panel) switches the tanks and the gauge.

Interesting... my 73 has the floor valve and the switch "located within the heater control panel" far right side. Truck was purchased new from the dealer by my grandfather, but I believe the dual tanks were added by the dealer at a later date. I get intermittent readings from the fuel gauge, and only from the front tank. Any chance someone has a good pic of where the dash switch for the gauge is located? Fixing this may end up being my weekend project.

1967/72: The switch mounts in a different location than 1973/74 (1975/79).

The switch and manually operated selector valve used 1967/74 are different than the types used 1975/79. I knew where the switch mounts on bumps and 1975/79's, couldn't recall where it mounted on 1973/74's.

1967/72 factory installed 25 gallon Auxillary Fuel Tank mounts on the inside of the left (drivers) side frame rail. Inside the bed, is a sheet metal cover that protects the filler tube.

1967/69: The filler tube/exposed fuel cap is located in front of the left rear wheel above the scallop (bumpside) line almost in a direct line from the in-cab tank fuel cap.

1970/72: The filler tube/exposed fuel cap is located in front of the left rear wheel below the scallop line.

There was no dealer installed fuel tank kit offered for any year truck ... and some peeps confuse the factory installed auxillary tank with aftermarket fuel tanks. There could be one tank or R/L saddle tanks.

Usually, the filler caps of aftermarket Styleside fuel tanks are located behind aluminum doors that were riveted to the bedside. The tank(s) may be mounted on the OUTSIDE of the frame rails.

trainguy1973: Sorry for the threadjack, it sounds like your truck is set up as it should have been from the factory.

NumberDummy: Thanks for the reply! My truck is a 73, it has the manual valve in the floor, and it definitely has the switch to the right of the heater controls. If I'm reading your comment correctly, that switch should not be there until 75. LMC shows it here, Part 47-0850 (#22 pictured) for a 75-79 and that looks exactly like what is installed in my 73. Later they show Part 47-0849 (#13 pictured) for a 73-74 application. All I wanted to know is where the correct 73-74 switch is mounted. I would imagine it is possible to put a 75 HVAC control plate w/switch in a 73 and wire it up for gauge control, would it not?

I definitely have this tank, but I don't have the sheetmetal cover inside the bed, so that matches.

Is that the same for 73-79? The location you describe is where my front/aux tank filler is located.

I'm not arguing that its not a factory part, I'm saying it is possible to retrofit factory parts onto a vehicle at a later date. I'll dig out the original paperwork tomorrow and see how it was ordered, that should shed some light on things. I have receipts for damn near EVERYTHING on this truck going aaaaall the way back, but its not organized in any way, shape or form.

1973's use a different tank (could have one or two, both located on the left side), do not have the bolt-on shield in the bed, nor have a raised scallop line (refered to as bumpside by 1967/72 peeps).

The switch belongs in the heater panel, I couldn't recall where it was on 1973/74's when I typed my first post.

Most of the info I typed in post #6 is 1967/72 related...because this is the forum you posted in.
