I noticed that there is a small star-shaped crack in my paint. It is about the size of a nickle and is barely noticable unless you get the light reflecting at just the right angle. I would like to get it fixed before it gets worse. The paint is about 5 years old and is a single stage lacquer.
My question is: Are there any nifty fixes (tricks) that a paint shop can do short of removing and repainting that spot?
I am not aware of any "tricks" that could be done to fix this. Not knowing where the crack is, I would say the best repair would be to sand it down to bare metal, feather the edges back, prime it and repaint.
If it is laquer, make sure the products you use are ok to use over laquer paint. My paint lines specifically state "do not use over laquer".
What material is this cracked paint on? When its cracked that big, I usually have only seen that on rubber or plastic bumpers caused by flex. Now if its on steel, there might still be flex involved that caused it to crack like that. But then it could also be the paint that was used as well. Old laquer would crack due to age and weather exposure.
