Some good news on the progress of the flood repair, all 12 communities that were isolated now have at least emergency access now. Here is a lengthy list of roads and bridges status.

For transportation issues related to the storm, please call the Vermont Agency of Transportation Recovery Call Center at 1-800-866-7099 from 7 am to 5 pm Monday - Friday.

VTrans Announces Emergency Access Restored To All Isolated Communities

Update as of 7:15 pm 08/31/2011

The Vermont Agency of Transportation announces that its crews have restored emergency access to all of the 12 Vermont communities that were cut off by Hurricane Irene. Crews, many of them working till darkness and in dangerous conditions, have now established access for supplies and emergency vehicles to reach all the towns in which all road connections were severed by flood waters on Sunday. This access allows emergency vehicles and supplies to reach these communities. Note that these roads have been restored for emergency access only, and that these roads are not yet open for use by the general public.

“We received word from our Incident Command Center in Dummerston that a majority of the residents of the Town of Wardsboro NOW have access out of the town to the Town of Jamaica,” reported Secretary Brian Searles. He noted that there are still approximately 20 families in the town between the two washouts on route 100.

VTrans has been working with both private contractors and the Vermont National Guard to connect those locations. “Vtrans employees are engaged in an unprecedented and extraordinary relief effort to restore services to Vermonters, and we are proud and grateful for their work,” Searles continued. “I want to add, we recognize that there may still be more Vermonters cut off on either town roads and private roads in other Vermont communities. Our commitment is to continue pursue access for these Vermonters to ensure their safety and we won’t stop till their reconnected,” continued Searles

Roads that now have emergency access are:

District 1

Marlboro is now accessible via a town road.

Route 9, Wilmington to Brattleboro, is passable to for emergency access.

District 2

Cavendish can be accessed with off road vehicles or equipment.

Stratton is still cut off in terms of state highway, but can now be accessed by a back road into the town.

Wardsboro access to the Jamaica is now established for most residents. Further work continues to complete full access.

District 3

Plymouth and Plymouth Notch can be accessed by four wheel drive vehicle.

Pittsfield now has emergency access on Route 100.

Mendon and Killington now have a emergency access along US Route 4.

District 4

Strafford is now accessible via a town road.

Hancock now has emergency access via VT 125 from Route 7 to Route 100.

Rochester is now accessible on Route 100 via Hancock on Route 125.

Granville is now accessible on Route 100 via Hancock on Route 125.

Stockbridge is now accessible on Route 100 via Hancock on Route 125.

VTrans Enhances Public Information Through Google Maps

The Vermont Agency of Transportation today announced the roll out of a brand new web-based Public Information Project that was made possible through a partnership with Google. A new map, utilizing Google, will advance the emergency response effort following Hurricane Irene. The map can be found at the VTrans website: Vermont Agency of Transportation.

“In the wake of this unprecedented storm that has ravaged our infrastructure it is all hands on deck, and the state is working to assess both state and local roads and bridges,” said Sue Minter VTrans Deputy Secretary. “A new and improved mapping system, which will be publicly available, will help us identify and publicize damaged infrastructure for the travelling public, as well as for our response team,” she said.

The Google map was established within 24 hours to meet the growing demands for accurate maps both for Agency personnel and for public information needs. The effort began when Matt Dunne, head of Google Community Affairs, contacted the Agency with the offer to assist, as they have done for states along the eastern seaboard impacted by Hurricane Irene. Google worked diligently along with VTrans IT staff, and within 8 hours a prototype was developed. The web-map “went live” 24 hours later.

“VTrans has been striving for some time to improve public information about road conditions, particularly during emergencies,” Minter said, noting the limitations of their current system. “Google reached out to help us improve our public outreach and information. Without this support, we would not have been able to meet this important need,” she said.

Dunne explained, “We are pleased to have worked with the Vermont Agency of Transportation to put together a map documenting road and bridge closures, flooding and other information. We hope this map is helpful to the state and fellow Vermonters recovering from Hurricane Irene.”

The map will be a dynamic product “in the making.” It will be updated daily as more information becomes available. The public is also invited to add their information at the Agency website.

VTrans’ public information project also includes a Call Center for people in search of traveler information. The Agency has been inundated with calls for assistance and responded by creating the following hotline: (800) 866-7099 which will be staffed between 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The feds have released $5million as a quick start which is good. Unfortunately it costs roughly a $1million a mile for a total reconstruct, we have a long ways to go.

Good morning Jim...Steve...Tim...all of Vermont!!!

Jim...that's got to be one of the longest posts in FTE history!!! Glad to see things are progressing...it's going to be a long process. As Tim pointed out...different parts of the country face different challenges presented by MA Nature and it's difficult to understand if you aren't going through it. IE...extreme heat and drought conditions in the Southwest...tornadoes through the heart of the country...etc...etc...etc.
