Distilled or RO (reverse osmosis) treated water is OK. The type sold at the grocery store isn't so pure it will be agressive to metals, as long as you also use antifreeze. Around here they have machines at the drugstore and WalMart that sell RO water for 25 cents a gallon, it has worked good for me. RO takes out 90%+ of the minerals.
I've always used distilled water for the coolant mix. And here's another minor frustation I've experienced with this problem ... no parts store around here (4 brand-name parts house stores, 2-farm/tractor stores, and 1 nat'l home improvement store) carries the replacement fitting!! It's a 'tall' 2-1/8" 90 degree fitting, 1/2" npt with 5/8" hose. A straight fitting won't work for me, I need the 90 degree type. I'll eventually get there like we all do when we run into these deals but geez, it'd be nice if it were little easier --and it doesn't help to be frustrated with the daily heat at 100+ !

That is not a hardware store part, but a special fitting made just for that purpose. It is best sourced either from your local Ford dealer, or from one of a half-million Mustang resto parts dealers. Or, you could try the bone yards and hope to find a good used one.
NAPA's a no-go locally on the part, they have it online but its cost is outrageous. But, got one coming via mail. Finally able to find in nearby town a 90 degree fitting - 5/8 hose to 3/8 male pipe and combined it with reducer - 3/8 pipe to 1/2 pipe. It'll be my backup. Hope to make time for the repair / replacements this weekend -- need a bit cooler air though... the garage was 105 degrees at 5PM. Got up to 112 here today!
Thanks to all for the help. -Ken
