I just bought a motor home with a 460 engine and the c6 transmission. does the 1989 e-350 c6 3speed automatic have over drive. I'm suspecting it does by the way the engine is reving so high around 45-50 mph and then never shifting into od. if it has over drive then i have lost it and was wondering if there is anything i can check before i drop the pan for a filter and fluid change. the engine has 29,000 and the transmission fluid has probably never been changed. Thank you
Unless it has an aftermarket add on OD ( like Gear venders or a US gear unit ) then the answer is no. The C6 is a 3 speed automatic with a 1:1 3rd gear.
What exactly does "1:1 3rd gear" mean and why does it sound like the engine is reving way to high at highway speed. Should i have a cruising gear or is there a lockout mechanism that is malfuntioning? On the crossmember that supports the tail stock of the transmission is marked "C6 3 Spd AOD". The shifter on the steering column indicates
P-R-D-2-1. My lincoln w/ 4speed over drive indicates P-R-D-D-1??????

1:1 means it's a direct drive. For every one revolution the input shaft spins the tail shaft/output shaft spins one revolution.
Well if your engine is revving way too high your transmission might not be shifting into third gear. If you are positive it shifts into all three gears then the gear ratio in your rear diff may just be too steep. If that is the case you'll have a couple choices. #1 have the rear end gears swapped out to a taller set( If your current gear are 4.11:1 then go to a 3.55 or 3.00 ) . #2 is add an aftermarket OD unit such as "gear vendors" or "US Gears"( I'm not sure if US Gears is still in business ) .
There is no such thing as a C6 AOD. The AOD is a completely different transmission then the C6. The marking are probably just the transmissions that use that tail shaft housing. It fits both the C6 & the AOD.
The C6 will have the P-R-N-D-2-1 shift indicator. Your Lincoln is P-R-N- ( OD ) -D-1 The circle around the first "D" is the Over in Over Drive.
ok, thanks guys. It is shifting twice, it just seems it cant get out of it own way at 50-55 mpg, like it doesn't have much more. It seems like the engine has alot more but the tranny is holding it back. It confuses me that they would not put an od transmission in an expensive huge-*** motor home.

Its because the c6 is a tough transmission. The AOD could of never pulled a motor home. My e350 with a 4.10 and a c6 does 3000RPM at 55mph on the highway. I put a tach in it because it scared the hell out of me when i took it on the highway right after I bought it with no exhaust.
