Great.....

I have a 76 stock F-100 2wd and i was driving down the road and my axle slipped out (drum cover and tire with it obviously) it shot out like 1.5 feet. I obviously broke my bearing cus loose ***** were every where.

Do i just need a bearing kit and reinstall it or do you think somthing else caused this mess.

Thanks, i believe i have a ford 9" rear (Could be mistaken however it is a stock f-100)

I don't think it's a 9" inch. They should have a retainer or a flange actually so the axle just cant slip out like that. I bet it's a non drop out (rear cover style). Tear it down and yes probably bearing and race set.

It actually could be a ford 9". The same thing happened on my 72. The outer bearing grenaded. On the passenger side if I remember correctly (25 years ago +/-). I talked with the local Mechanic about it at the time, and was told that it was only possible on one side. Cost to repair it was under $200, but a part of that was to repair where the tube had been egged out

Does anyone know for sure what axle a 76 f-100 had in the rear?

It's a F-100 or F-150 in the Dents, it came with a Ford 9" rear and in all likelyhood, still has original. The retainer is a pressed on collar that goes on the axle shaft behind the wheel bearing. In hard usage, lot's of heavy loads, or after a wheel bearing change maybe where the collar is pressed off, then a new one back on ..... the collar can work itself off. Heavy overloads like cab high stacked oak / poplar / locust firewood will do it by flexing the axle enough to walk it loose mile by mile.

Note the 31 spline axle on the right with the bearing and collar. The smaller 28 spline axle on the left has it too, just smaller. Here is another picture from a tech article here.

Any idea where I could find a retainer plate? The retainer plate was torn to shreds so I need to replace it. I've searched and only found a couple on sites like broncograveyard but the retainer plate appears to be different. The one I have looks like the retainer plate in the post above. The link is the only one I seem to be able to find. Would this work?

Axle Shaft Retainer Plate, 1978

Edit:
I found this one, it appears to be similar to my original. Can anyone help and tell me if this is the correct part I should order?

Maybe consider just getting a cheap Dana 60 rear axle for maybe $100 and swap it.
