66 F250 - starting issues
I just completed a front disk, power brake, power steering upgrade and have finally been driving my beast around.
In general, the truck is a ton of fun but I have noticed that I am having some erratic starting issues. Sometimes the engine will catch and start up right away but other times it will just keep chugging and chugging away without catching on and starting. Usually, I have the choke pulled all the way out and will ease it in until it starts.
I have an Accel coil, electronic ignition, and a new battery in place so I don't think those are the culprits.
Where else should I be looking and what is the typical procedure to figure out where the problem is? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks ahead of time!
I am pretty sure it's an Edelbrock Performer 600cfm or something like that. Definitely Edelbrock just not sure about the rest. I know that my dad took a bunch of carb cleaner and went to town on it. The truck generally ran much better once that was done about 3 or 4 months ago...

Yeah sometimes that carb cleaner can do more harm than good! You might check into a rebuild!
If you look on the mounting flange on the front of the Carb . on the left (passenger side corner) as you look from the front of your truck ... there should be a 4 digit number such as 1405, 1407, 1805 something like that..... that is the model of carb that you have..... post what you have and it will help us to identify it as to the type, and CFM rating
jets in the Edlebrock and holley carbs? something about reacting to the zinc made carbs
and I just put a brand new holley street avenger on my 351'' anyway not to change the subject but do you smell gas while your trying to start it? if so it's flooding out'' if not check to make sure your fuel pump is pumping correct? does it start good when it's cold
and then not want to when it's hot? could be vaporlock?
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be because i cant figure it out. help would help a lot.

WIll if it has been sitting for quite a while, it most likely has varnish in the carb, from gasoline drying out! Flush out the carb, and pull the jets and inspect them.. also check for stuck floats, plugged fuel filter, and bad fuel pump. How long has the fuel been in the tank , it could be bad also!
BTW, when I said that my dad took carb cleaner and went to town on it, he actually took it apart and did things proper as far as I know. I did not purchase new jets or anything though...
I took a look at the carb and it is stamped 1405 2417 on the front. Google tells me it is a 600cfm Performer. I have no idea when it was last 'properly' rebuilt. Any recommendations on a rebuild kit or what brand to trust?
I will have to check the fuel filter and see if the spark plugs are fouled when I get some time. I'll get to that sometime next week.
So then the gas is definitely coming out of the jet's?
I know it seems redundant but you need to be sure! If you pump the pedal with the engine off you should see the fuel spraying into the venturis, but that is a separate function from the jets! If it is an edelbrock did you pull the metering rods and check the ends for debris or varnish? If so blast a bit of carb cleaner down into the jets while the metering rods are removed... just make sure, to double and triple check everything. Check for loose ignition wires, going to the coil. you might check your coil too! Check the ground strap from the block to the firewall is it tight, and is it making good contact! , Does the ignition wire from the starter solenoid to the coil make good contact on both ends, is that wire bare anywhere, possibly shorting out on the block? How do the plugs look when you remove them are they wet...aka flooding the engine, are the plugs clean...too much carbon build up on the plugs will cause them to misfire, or even not fire at all.. Are they even sparking.. most auto parts have a simple plug tester, that you can use to check for spark.. It seems it is always the most simple overlooked thing that causes the greatest trouble....
How to Test an Ignition Coil
it is pretty easy! do you have an ohm meter?
