460 Build on Budget

Hello fellow Ford guys,

Im new to this sit here. I have been doing alot of research and reading here. I have been a member of a few subaru forums for years and dodge forums. But I no longer have my beloved 05 dodge powerwagon.

Well I have myself a 96 F250 7.5L EO4D 4x4 xcab. I was told that the guy that had it before me just put in $3500-4k into a rebuilt tranny. So I shouldnt have to worry about that, hopefully its not like dodges trannys LOL. It is sittin on 33" tires with 4.10s. I will be using it to haul my RV its not super heavy but not light 8-9k loaded with full gear my home plus gear in back of truck.

I did alot of reading in the FourWheeler Mag on Project M.P.G. So for now Im going to do pretty much everything they did. But I did get an extra 460 when I was getting parts to fix this truck with the plans to build the motor.

What is a good rebuild kit for this motor? I would like to use the Comp EFI kit that has the timing chain gear, lifters, cam, springs and retainers. As far as motor New bearings, arb bolts, maybe forged pistons, PnP heads or Alum which every is more cost eff, Ill have the Project MPG parts already like AFPR, exhaust etc. Will I need a chip? Im going to stay with SD for cost wize.
I was thinking of goin with a set of 32lb injectors to help with AFRs. Also thinking of the twin 61mm tb by bbk. I was also thinking about maybe seeing if I could mod the fuel to use E85. I was going to do that on my 07 sti with 25lb boost and running that kind of boost was ok on E85 but not on 91oct. So in theory can I run E85 get more gains safer?????

I would like any input and help or suggestions. Sorry bout the long post its my first here and wanted to get most ?s out there cuz I know alot of you guys will ask them. And has far as numbers go. What I have been reading and what I have gathered. Im hoping or looking to get round 400-450hp and 600-650tq. I was going to build another dodge I had which was a 8.0 V10 trq beast. Hoping for numbers that would have been close to building that.

Thanks again everyone
Clay

If you're looking to put as much work into heads and such, you're going to have to ditch your stock ECU entirely. You could go with a late 80's/early 90's mustang ECU (for the HUGE aftermarket support), you could find a '96 460 ECU from California which is MAF rather than MAP, or a 3rd party aftermarket ECU. The stock ECU is incapable of accounting for too large of changes in motor.

As far as actual engine upgrades, the biggest *easy* gains will be in exhaust port work and headers. The exhaust side of the motor is the major short-coming in stock form. The stock cam isn't too bad if you want to leave it as a torque beast, but there are some cams which will show gains as long as you're not too concerned with loosing even more gas mileage.

Don't take this as 100% true, but I'm not sure if there are any EFI compatible aluminum heads. From what I've seen, you'll need to use a carb head/intake combo and drill in your own injector bungs to keep the EFI with aluminum heads. If you do this, you could bump the compression up a bit and still avoid ping which should add a bit of power.

Also, look up the SixLitre tuneup which specs out a higher voltage coil, higher gapped spark plugs, and a bump in timing to get you more power and slightly better fuel mileage.

Thank you for that. So I will keep stock heads stock except for port n polish. Im wanting to use the 34-255-5 comp cam. The truck I have now is 96 made in 9/95. The extra motor I have came out of a 88 or 89. Is it going to have the same heads? I went to use the fan on my truck but had to slot the holes for it to fit. The water pump and pulley are smaller size then my truck. Also I read some where that my gen truck has factory 26lb injectors and the extra motor I have is 24lb injector gen year?
I had to use the fuel lines of that donner truck, the truck the motor came from. It had the black plastic lines and my truck came with the steel braided lines. Do I need to find another set of my gen year fuel lines?

I read somewhere about the sixliter tune. I think I have already did that. I have a accel super coil, gapped my new plugs a 50 and installed ford racing 9mm wires and hp cap and rotor. I also timed it to 12* instead of factory 10*. Im trying to work out a deal to get some headers now.

Thanks guys for all your help.

You'll want to use the heads from your '96. They should be F3TE heads which are going to be slightly better than the 88/89 heads.

I've never heard anything about the 24 vs 26 lb injectors. I'm pretty sure my '95 has 24 lb/hr injectors.
