Question Exhaust pricing...

So, I'm having a heck of a time finding someone to install some new exhaust. My goal is something along the lines of the magnaflow catbacks exiting behind the rear tire on BOTH sides. (I want to hear myself when I pass semis Hehe) Anywho - there is only one performance muffler business in the vicinity, and they said they do flowmasters only but can set up a pretty similar system for about $300 (installation included) - reason for the low price? They make their own pipes. Kind of makes me nervous. Most of the systems I find online are anywhere from $650-upwards to a grand - not including installation.

I'm considering ordering the system online and installing it myself b/c I can't help but wonder where they are cutting corners elsewhere to put in a system so cheaply.

If I call this local group back, what can I ask them to make sure they aren't cutting corners? I just don't want a POS that rusts out in 2 years and we are stationed on the other side of the world, so I won't be able to get back to them for repairs. Ideas? Tips?

They use aluminized pipe that will only last a few years. Probably not much longer than the Flowmaster before it rots away.

The Magnaflow cat-backs are pretty easy to install and are all stainless steel so they will not rust away and have a lifetime warranty. Well worth the extra money. I have their kits on my Mustang and my truck.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I do think I'm going to install them myself. Might call in my brother for some muscle (hubster is tdy as usual) but I've watched several videos and magnaflow has a video specifically for the '10 F-150, so I really think it is doable. I appreciate the insight!!

There are different types of stainless... T304 and T409.... as well as others i believe. Both will be good and provide a long life ahead. I've got about 4 years on my Borla and it still looks pretty damn good while the rest of the truck is rusting a little bit.

Anyway, they will be using some Aluminum and chances are they'll cut from just before your muffler (or wherever the resonator is on the F150 if you want it off...) and then weld in from there. It'll be a more "permanent" job than a bolt on system will be.

Bolt ons go from the CATalytic convert back, from teh flange. A little more complete.

ALso they have mandrel bends instead of crush bends which mean the exhaust flow is a little better.

Typically, however, cat backs are gonna be a little more reserved unless you get one with an offroad type sound (I think Roush has an offroad catback). Corsa also makes 2 volumes for theirs.

Good luck.

I got...

I got a Magnaflow system about a month ago (part number 16519) and I am very happy with it. Just the right amount of sound without being too loud on the highway. Everything went together fairly easy except for a few of the brake lines got a little close to the exhaust piping than I would like. I got some thermal wrap (to wrap the brake lines) and have been keeping an eye on it, no issues.

I paid $633.24 (shipped) from bestmagnaflowsource.com.

I have a 5.4L 2010 Lariat.

I paid $450 for my 14" MagnaFlow installed at All Star Mufflers in Brighton, CO. They obviously used their own pipes but they used pipe that was Mandrel bends not crushed. I couldn't be happier for the price and they gaurantee their work. Here is a sound clip they took and sent to me the day they installed it.

Try Magnaflow Performance | Discount Performance Auto Parts | Performance Exhaust Systems | Flowmaster Performance Mufflers Look up your magnaflow kit and make a lowball offer, say $400. They will counteroffer a great price. I got my kit for $416 shipped to my door in 3 days. About $200 under list price. I also have a Magnaflow cat-back on the Mustang. It flows so much better than the 40 series Rustmasters that were on it.

Sounds good- I like how he starts your truck and proceeds to rev the **** out of it. Made me cringe a little...

That Magnaflow sounds sick! I wonder if the 3.7L would sound good with an exhaust like that or like a lawnmower lol. I take it that Truck has a 5.4 since its an 09, but any way it sounds pretty bad a$$.

I used a local shop near APG here in Maryland. MagnaFlow cat back installed for $350 (in 2009). Took them a couple of hours and it was done. Good sound not too loud, just enough. And I didn't even get my hands dirty. Chris

While everyone loves the sound of their new exhaust systems, did anyone notice any power increase, since they say it can add 20 to 30 hp? just wondering, because that is the next thing for my 09 FX4

I'd doubt you will see that much. 10 to 15 would be a more realistic number from a cat-back.
