What battery to use?

I'v been using a 12v battery in my F6, but the ignition coil was getting awfully hot and the regulator would tic. So I am thinking of getting a 6v battery, will this fix the problems?

P.S. Im pretty sure the electrical system is all original.

If it's never been converted to 12V, I'm surprised it's still running at all. To run on 12V you need a 12V coil, a ballast resistor, and 12V generator and voltage regulator...not to mention all the lights and gauges.

The starter will probably be okay.

So it should have 6v battery? I put one in and the starter would turn but very slowly and I dont think the electric fuel pump is working either. Is it possible that part of the truck is 12v and part 6v?

Anything is possible after 62 years. What battery, if any, was in there before? It's likely still 6v. I'd suggest getting a new 6v battery and coil and rewire the truck at least enough to start it.

Check the light bulbs, see if they are 6 or 12 v.

I'm just guessing but I'd say it has probably been already been converted to 12V, but it is possible that some 6V items are still being used. Perhaps, whoever did the conversion didn't do the job correctly. How much driving have you done with the 12V battery in it? Does the electrical system charge? Have you used the lights?

The other thing is your truck Pos or neg ground? '49 6v systems where pos ground and most times when converted to 12v they use a neg ground...

It is still a positive ground. What is the purpose of the regulator? The lights seemed to operate fine on the 12v battery, as well as the starter and fuel pump and the truck would seem to run smoothly. It just had the problems I already stated like the ignition (6V) getting hot and the regulator ticking. I hope I didnt blow $100 on a 6v battery I didnt need.

What do you mean, the ignition is 6v? If you have a 6v coil you need to replace it with a 12v and a ballast resistor.

Regulators do make a ticking sound as the contacts open and close, but I'm surprised you could hear it.

One thing to check is to see if you have voltage reducers at the back of the gauges. If the gauges are stock and running on 12v, then you should find some reducers.

FYI, 12V ignition should have a ballast resistor feeding the distributor. The resistor reduces the voltage to around +/-9 volts. Otherwise you will be blowing points all the time. Have you been?

Mystery Solved!

I charged up the 6v battery and stuck it back in. Now everything operates perfectly with no ticking or heat. I am surprised I didnt blow anything with the 12v battery but hey I'v been feeling pretty lucky lately. Thanks for all your guys input!

You never mentioned if you checked the voltage with the truck running. With a 6 volt battery, you need to have about 7.0-7.4 volts. Jag
