Wiring questions : routing & size/gauge

Where is everyone running the wiring for accessories into the cab on these new trucks ?
I see a couple of the rubber floor plugs that I could cut a hole in but not sure if there is a better place to run a wire/s into the cab.
I have tried running wires through the rubber plugs on other vehicles and they ended up tearing.... not so interested in tearing the rubber floor plugs on the new truck.

What size/gauge of wire is the upfitter switches blunt cuts?
I need to buy some wire but not sure what size to purchase.
It appears switches 1:2 and 3:4 might be the same, and only two different sizes/gauges of wire is used across all four switches.

Thanks !

Depends on what you plan to power and how you plan to hook them up. If you are going to use a relay on the engine side of the firewall, and draw power directly from the battery, you could use the pass thru wires that already exist. If you plan to power directly off of the upfitter switches then the size of the pass through wires will not likely be big enough to use (they're like 16 or 18 ga).

The upfitter switches are already on relays with capacities of 10 - 25 amps and I think the wire size for the upfitter blunt cuts are 14 ga IIRC, but if you plan to draw power directly off of those circuits you will need to pull in new wire.

If you end up going through the floor, use grommets of the right size and seal them up with silicone just in case. Hope this helps.

To add to Part Timer's comments; you will want to run the right gauge for the intended amp draw AND for the distance. Google "wire gauge chart" and you will find charts for determining the right gauge.

I wouldn't use that chart in that link. It shows that you can use 18 ga wire for a 40A circuit run 3 feet?!? .

I wouldn't use 18 ga if it was only a 3 inch run.

A a basic guide:
18ga - 5A
16ga - 10A
14ga - 15A
12ga - 20A
10ga - 30A
8ga - 40A

Good catch. It was 2 in the morning when I posted that. Timmy was tired when he posted...

There are a number of 12V charts available to determine wire size based on length. Just put "12V" in the Google search.
