What to look for when buying an 04-08 F150

Well, honestly, late 06-08 seems to be the better choice.
Less issues with cam phasers, solenoids, etc related to cam timing.
The plug issue (2 peice plug splits upon removal) was cured in really late 07 with a new head design.
The LS in the rear diff can chatter, regardless of year, depending on maintenance and use.
The cam phasers and plugs are the two biggies though. They come up most often, as compared to other issues. Both are repairable, albeit with some cost, but isn't that the case with everything?
EDIT: Forgot that you said 4x4. The IWEs and the 4wd solenoid on the firewall can cause some issues. System works on maintaining vacuum pressure, so any drop or loss makes the system want to engage. Sometimes it's partial, and you can here the pawls on the hubs grinding.
