I have a f250 4x4 5.8 automatic. The truck will start run for 30 to 40 seconds then shuts itself off. Through research I thought it was the Idle air control valve So I installed a new one before that cleaned the throttle plates and surrounding areas. The truck started with the same result. The truck will keep starting if I shut it off before it shuts itself off. If it shuts itself off I have to turn the key off and wait. Then it will start and run for less than a minute.

 

Sounds to me like the ignition module is failing when hot.

 

The engine dose not run long enough to even get warmed up. it only runs for 30to40 seconds before it shuts it self off.

 

Sounds like the same problem I had on my `90,found that the PIP sensor in the distributor was the problem.Theres some test that you can do to check it but you`ll need a degree to figure it out.Just try swapping the distributor with one that you know is good and see if it stays running.You can get the part for around $20 but you`ll need to press the dist. gear off to replace it.

he shouldnt need to do anything with the dizzy gear. just get a distributor from 88-91 5.8. it can come from bronco,f150,f250,f350 doesnt matter.
