There are guys running all types of stuff in their trannys - Type F, j20c, sewing machine oil etc.

I guess it all works and have their own appropriate application. On a street driven truck that would see a good many miles Id probably keep the type F.

not really. there is a cutoff point for the type F trans fluid. i want to say somewhere in the mid 80's ford switched to dextron for the C-6, and if you put type F in a dextron trans it does nasty things.

i use valvoline synthetic in the C-6 in my 88 after the guy that built it told me to use it.

over 150k miles on it now without any problems. i have changed the fluid twice.

and for the fuel thing, keep a close eye on the levels in the tanks. the fuel tank selector switch is a known problem in those trucks. it will draw from one tank, but return to the other.

type F wont do anything "nasty" in a later c6 except firm up the shifts.

without rebuilding your right. If your rebuilding a C6 either can be used (it was due to teh material the older trans seals were made from)

Oh and the switch was in teh mid 70s.

But going to type F does firm up the shifts to a certian extent. If you check on things like B&M trick shift, thats all it is. Type F with blue coloring added.
You can even use type of in other brands with the same affect (which is why you can use the b&m fluid in a th350 and get better shifts) big difference is type F has a friction modifier in it.

Crossflow problems? I say you have a beast of a truck, my thing is, if your gonna be 4x4'in in it. Throw a 4spd T-18 or a Close Range T-19 or a ZF-5 speed....thats really fun XD. You will get better MPGs if you do....
