I'm gonna say air conditioning. Doesn't look like an OEM compressor setup on top there so I'm guessing it's got on-board air?

That is the switch that controls the AC clutch on the stock FS-6 compressor. Mine is broke so I made a new connector, but you can tell from this pic how it plugged in.

Thanks for all the pics and info everyone !

I wonder if this non-OEM A/C compressor is because its part of a conversion to R134 gas rather than the R14 or whatever it is......... I'll have to find a specialist in Air con I think and get a run down on whats fitted. I haven't actually tried the air con yet, but my guess its all but dead. I'll tape and secure that plug then I think as well.

Today, non stop tinkering with the truck - weather changed several times from windy to rain to scorching sun, back to rain again..... sigh

But I was pleased to get as far ahead as I did with the truck, thanks to this forum and the helpful tips and guidance I feel pretty good at the end of this day, got a lot done and with positive outlooks.

I have just spent a half hour looking at the info on coolant again. My biggest problem is getting things into U.K terms that local suppliers will understand. I don't have many auto shops in this town, but I know there is a John Deer showroom ( as this area is mostly agricultural and full of various tractors and combines ) but I expect a pretty high price from them. I'd go for Green coolant and an SCA addative, but I'd rather get something long life and even healthier for the engine. I should really change the thermostat too - in fact, does anyone have a part number for that ? Might be I can get it through a local Ford garage if its similar to something else in the UK.

Thanks again everyone !

Looking at your pix, I would recommend putting a bolt in the line clamp before you have an injection line failure from vibration.

Original posters. The passenger side injection line clamp is missing a bolt (under the air cleaner) and it's missing an entire line clamp on the drivers side (also under the air cleaner)

Ooop ! Thanks for the observation ! I'll get to that today asap.

FYI, if no one else had seen my other thread, I just bought the truck on Sunday and its previous owner was clearly not very careful, at all. So any other observations or thoughts on things to check - do let me know !
