Stock Michelins are Wearing FAST

2011 F350 4x4 20" Wheels with the Stock Michelins
4700 miles
No towing so far and no abuse to tires.

I am shocked how fast these tires are wearing. The corners, particularly on the front are going to be bald by 12000 miles. My Dad said I've got to be running the tires way too low. I am actually running about 78lbs above the 65 Ford is recommending.

Edit: Even at 78lbs the tires squat and still more than completely contact the pavement side to side.

In the centers, I have already lost 1/4 of the tread depth.

Took the tires by a Michelin dealer Saturday afternoon to start documenting a warranty claim on the tires. The dealer said I should get 60,000 out of the tires. Well, I don't expect that, but a least 35,000 is reasonable.

At the rate mine are wearing, I am already concerned about having to replace my tires going into winter.

How is Michelin working with everyone else on their tire claims? I certainly feel like I am due some credit on $1300 tires but I sure don't want another set of these Michelin. The rubber compound is obviously way too soft and even though the tires are E rated, they are not up to the job of working on the 2011 trucks. I never saw this type of poor wear performance on the Continental Contitrac TRs that came on my 2008.

You right they are soft. That's how they get the mud and snow rating. What does your door sticker say for psi front and rear? That sounds wrong to be that many psi over 65 rating on front? Probably why the centre is wearing out, probably why you are getting cupping on outside edges. I got 30k off Contis, 35k from BFG A/Ts, now on yokohama geolander at/s they have a 50k warrenty.

I have almost 60K on my michelins and will get another 3-4 thousand out of them. I have done a fair amount of towing my 10K lb work trailer and about 1200 miles towing my 15k lb camper. I did have a check engine light on for about 30k miles with reduced power so this might have helped my tires, but over all I am happy with these tires. I am one of the few from what I have read on here regarding the michelins. I have been checking on price's and I think I will go with BFG AT's because I have gotten 70K out of them on several occasions and they are about $40 a tire cheaper than the michelins.

I was concerned at first at how fast the Michelins seem to wear down. I was certain they would not make 20000 miles. My dealer said to quit worrying, the wear would stabilize. I have 31000 on them now and they look like they did at 20000 miles. It appears they will make 45000 or so.

Regards

I agree. The first third of the tread depth seems to wear away quickly but the more miles you get on them the slower they wear. My experience with 2 sets of Goodyear Wrangler A/TS was much the same. There was always an Oh My God feeling at 10,000 miles, but once they hit 35,000 miles or so, it seemed like they would never wear out for the next 20,000 miles. Unfortunately I think the last 20,000 miles on these Michelins are going to be seriously lacking traction on just about all surfaces.

I hear there is a TSB out on the 2011 tire wear issue. If anyone has a copy, I'd sure like to read it. Unfortunately, the Motorcraft Site for Paid Private Subscribers no longer lets you get access to the TSBs.

I am not looking to get something for nothing, but in loosing 1/3 of the tread over 4700 miles, Michelin should make good on a proration.

The michelin A/T tires have had the treads chunk off of them on a few F350's. From what I hear, Michelin is not standing by the warranty on the tires. They say that the truck is too heavy for the tires.

The TSB I remember hearing about for these trucks and the Michelin tires is what I summed up to "tell customer he/she is doing aggressive launches and send them on their way."
I'll try to find it.
Maybe there is a newer more useful release.

EDIT: I should note some dealers were helping in severe cases.

And this is what I have never done in my truck. I will have to trust that my servicing dealer will look out for me on this at the correct time as they know I am honest and trustworthy in my dealings with them.

What's fair is fair and Ford/Michelin avoiding this problem with much less than stellar customer relationships, is not the way to treat a customer who has spent $60,000 on a truck. Henry Ford would obviously be very displeased.

Last week, one of my michelins ate some road hazard and Imhad to replace one of the tires (not cheap). I've got and aligment appt in a few days and while getting info on trying to get some more straight line stsbility from the gue we cheched the tires. The origianal tires (~6000miles) have about 10/32" on them and the new tire (~1100miles) have 15/32" on it. he also noticed what he called "scalpping". One side of the tread was smooth and the other was still sharp edged. He suggested cross rotating the tires to holp with the scalping and to get longer wear out of the tires. So off to the tire guys and they agreed with that idea.

However 4/32" to 5/32" for 7100 miles seems abit steep and I can't see getting close to 60k miles on them.

My 2008 f250 had 31k miles on it when I turned it in. It had goodyears on it and they were getting time to replace as well. They might have been able to make 40k.

I just had these put on my F250. Love them so far but I only have about 4K on them. I have had Bridgestone Dueler's on several trucks and they have been a very good tire for my uses. I also like the GoodYear Silent Armor. The Duratrac Goodyear's were also great but kinda noisy for my taste.

BTW, I got 59,000 miles out of the stock Michelin 20's, and I cross rotated every 5-8K.

i had the "chunking" problem on both the rear tires at 4100 miles. So I took my $60,000 new truck to Ford and advised them of said problem. They gave me the heavy foot/spinning my tires speach and DID NOT replace the tires. The Ford rep then contacted Michelin and Michelin replaced the tires. I was told this would be the "only time" this would be allowed. I think we have all paid way too much for our vehicles to have to argue over replacing a tire or two.
