How does one go about converting an original 3-wire generator to a single wire alternator? I've been contemplating the switch, and my impatience and lack of spending cash wants me to go with the 6 volt.

There are a few places that sell 6v/pos. ground alternators. Since they use a custom internal regulator, this is something you have to buy ready-to-go. 1-wire or 3-wire, whatever they sell is what you get. No big deal either way, they are a huge improvement over a generator IMO.
There are some issues getting one that lines up with the truck WPs. See here for instance:
i had that trouble when i put one on the 239 flat head. i just cut the mounting ear on the long part of the alt. just enough to line up with the pully. it line up perfect and had no trouble.
