I have a 2006 F-150 4x4 and the 4x4 quit working, it gives me a P 1867 & P 1891 code but my scaner don't tell me posible causes. any sugestions as to where to start looking? thanks for any help.

 

P1867 code is transfer case contact plate circuit general failure. P1891 code is transfer case contact plate ground return open circuit. Most likely needs a transfer case shift motor. Very common on these trucks. Had to replace on my 06 as well. It was done under warranty. I hope this helps.

A lot of times you can get it to engage by smacking it with a hammer. If it does engage, it's definately the shift motor. That's how the dealership tech diagnosed mine. I make it a point to engage 4wd once every month or two just to make sure it works. It's especially important for me since I don't drive the truck a lot. I drive an old beater 01 Sable LS every day because it gets 9-10 mpg better than the truck. At 300 miles a week I save $20 a week driving the Sable which more than covers the plates and insurance on it.
