I've decided I need to add a catalytic convertor to my truck- because it doesn't smell very pretty. I've had the carb tuned, timing and dwell adjusted, and it still dosen't smell very good- in fact it smells really bad. Any recommendations for a catalytic convertor that's compatible with a carburetor? The truck has the 390, 4spd, single exhaust (2 1/4 inch pipe) and stock 2100 carb.
Well, I was hoping I would be able to install the cat and cut back on the smell, but I'm beginning to wonder if it could be other things contributing to it, like something wrong with the carb itself. I'm thinking maybe the power valve went ca-put (again) Do you have know of a source for them? The only way I have of getting them is in a carb kit, and I don't need more of those.
But I'm still interested in a catalytic, I've hard they have new high flow cat's designed specifically for carb'd engines, I thought it might be worth looking into.

56 available NOS (none in the PNW).
----------------------------------- D5TZ-9A565-A .. Fuel Enrichment Valve / ID: Pink dab of paint (Motorcraft CE-103) / Obsolete
59 available NOS, one in WA: VAN CLEVE FORD in Morton WA has ONE = 360-496-5999.
Catalytic converters are not intended to improve the "smell," in fact there's a decent chance it's going to smell just as "bad," or "bad" in a different way. What does it smell like? That's a sign something else is going on - anything to cover that up is just a band-aid for an underlying issue.
Most people's efforts are put toward how to get rid of them - not the other way around.
Thanks bill, I just might have to give them a call.
Right now the way it smells is like it's rich. I've adjusted the carb (even had someone else do it once) and it didn't make much difference. We leaned it out till it wouldn't idle any more then richened it up a quarter turn, just enough to keep it running.
