4.6 Cams

Hi I'm wondering what would be the best cam upgrade for a 99 F150 with a 4.6. Engine is stock except for the gotts mod. I have looked at cams at Comp Cams and at Modular Head Shop. Just wondering if any of you have used any of the cams they offer.
Thanks.

What other supporting and compatible mods are you intending to do?
And you intended result?
Cams fall into two major areas, those than move the power band upward and those than provide more cylinder pressure at the low end.
There is more to this than you might believe at this time.
After mods like this a PCM custom tune is in order to get the most from the changes or just run it as it is..
The Comp Cams XE270AH won't do much for you below 3000, should have ported heads, intake throttle body work etc to get the most power out.
Good luck.

Well after talking to the people at Modular Head Shop, the torquer cams sound like a good way to go. They said it should increase it by about 20 hp and 40 lb ft. I'm not looking to make it a race truck or anything, would just be nice to have a little extra power when towing my GLH on my car dolly.

Sounds good. Do they give any performance specs?
I would like to see what the power curve looks like or where peak torque is made.
The numbers given are quite good.
.
.
I just visited their website.
Go down to the 4.6 PI section and look at the 46 Torquer.
The first line gives the stock cam specs.
Your looking at $600 for these.
Be sure you know how to follow their setup procedure.
I believe the cams are set up at 4 degrees advance plus have a little longer duration.
The cam advance builds cylinder pressure a bit higher by opening and closing the valves a little earlier in the cycle.
Good luck.

Okay thanks, from what the guy said is that the torquer cams make power below 3500 rpms and the stage 1 cams raise the power band by about 500 rpm. Would it also be a worthwhile upgrade to use the PI truck intake on my NPI 4.6? I'm thinking about first doing the efan upgrade before cams.

JV, Bluegrass is by far my superior in matters such as there but let me get some basic info from ya How many miles on the motor? another option for towing would be gears. If you have 3.55, go to a 3.73 or higher. As bluegrass mentioned, doing cams requires PCM tune and adjusting the tables for optimal performance. As far the PI intake, the answer would be no. ou'd have to change the heads to take advantage of the increased airflow, and that's more involved than you probably want to get into. Start with your little things first such as efans, then move on to the big stuff. How mechanically handy are you is going to be your limit.

Truck has 116k on it and runs very well. I drive on the highway a lot so I would like to keep my 3.55 gears instead of running something higher. I like my 17-18 mpg I get with it. Yeah I guess I have read that the PI truck intake does not flow much more than the NPI one. I can hold my own with working on cars, I've swapped engines and transmissions in most of my cars that I have and what I can't do my brother who is a Ford mechanic would help with.

The PI intake will bottleneck at the non-PI head ports, so it may even cost you some power since the port shapes are different.
Depending on the cam specs, I haven't looked, since the truck has a MAF, it will run pretty well without a tune on mild, smooth idle camshafts. Yes you can squeeze a bit more power with a tune. The Diablosport Predator I used on the 01 that I had worked well and they can write a custom tune when you give them all of your mods if you want to go that route.
I got better mileage running the 93 octane tune with 93 octane fuel than with the stock tune. Gained about 1.5mpg which made it actually cheaper to pay the $.20 more per gallon in the long run.
I agree, I would go tuner, e-fan, maybe exhaust (Magnaflow). A CAI will give minimal gains over the stock intake. Then look into cams. With 116K on the clock, I would definitely install new valve springs as well.

Oh, and since this is more engine specific, I have moved this to the 4.6L/5.4L forum.

Thanks for the advice, how much does the Diablosport Predator tune run? If I do exhaust, I don't want anything loud. With 116k it should need new valve springs?

Anytime you instal larger cams, you need matching springs.
The Diablosport is around $300 usually.

Stay away from Modular Head shop. Dude has a bad reputation after being called out from a well known guy in the Mustang world.
