My crazy logic. Up-pipe/exhaust manifolds

I have been having a problem with low end power. But great top end power.

It's after the truck has warmed up. Great power when cold.

I have a hiss though. More noticeable when warmed up.

Is it possible when the up pipe is cold if there is a crack in it, it gets smaller when the truck is cold and as it warms up the crack expands? Then contracts when cold?

Or could it be my exhaust manifolds acting the same/doing almost the same thing as my up pipe?

I think it's my up pipe because..I unplugged and injector the plugged it back in and got black smoke coming from behind my turbo.

Could that be true or am i thinking crazy?

I don't know about our trucks exhaust but my jeeps 4.0 exhausts manifold are made like tube headers they crack, when you start it you hear the leak the more it warms it goes away when hot almost gone , so the heating of the metal expands it i guess.

Usually as steel does what it does when heat applied will expand.... so if you have a cracked manifold it will be bigger when its cold and it will start to close ever so slightly when warm.

however it shifts things around and maybe one of the bellows on the up pipe is cracked...look for black soot around the joints. that will be a good indicator.

take it out and look at it before you just replace. You might just need the up-pipe on the passenger side instead of the whole dang thing. If you do I have a used one I'll sell you cheap. $400 would be for the complete y-pipe. It might just be a leak too.

Well I checked around the turbo, for leaks by hand and black soot, on cold mornings I would start the truck up, and feel around where the up pipe and exhaust manifolds meet, and nothing,

Now when I take the clamp off the turbo that part up the up pipe moves quite a bit, more then I believe it should,

alright, Ill explain best I can..

Lets say you totally remove the turbo out of the truck...

The up pipe that connects to the back of the turbo, if you follow it down you will hit the flex part of it..

If you hold that part the connects to the back of the turbo, and push it back and foward, it will move, a decent amount, I think that should be tight?

So I am thinking its leaking from the flex part of the pipe, hence why I saw the black smoke coming from behind the turbo.

There are two flex joints between the turbo and the exhaust manifolds. It typically breaks on the passenger side: Page 11: Component Locations

But it can break on either. It takes some wiggling to get it all the way out but usually you can see where the leak is if one of the flex joints is broken from the soot.

yea its prob broke right there. they can break easy esp when removing a turbo. in theory they are suppose to flex to allow the pipe to connect to the turbo but with the extreme heat all they really do is break! elite has a pipe without the flex joints in it but i heard that there warranty isnt that great

Tyler the drivers side y pipe is what was cracked on mine it moved a lot like you said your did. The Y pipe has two flex joints one is ribbed looking the other is a stainless weave looking flex , mine cracked in ribbed section and was leaking where stainless weave mates to pipe . I bought mine y pipe from parts guyed for like 170 plus shipping. My local dealer wanted 285 for the same pipe.
