It's more of a shame that the manufacturers didn't do what they needed to do to begin with. Same with gas engines in the 70's...

Then, of course, you have the mass-market appeal of tuning them, deleting things, etc. etc.

That's not entirely fair. They couldn't do it in the 70's, they didn't know how. Like any technology it starts out primitive and then goes through a continuos process of improvement.

What they should have done was subject diesels to the same air improvement requirements as the gassers, back in the 70's, and we'd be all through that by now instead of stuck with 70's level of "smog" technology for diesels of today.

That's not entirely fair either as I'm sure they managed to transfer some of what they've learned on the gas side to diesel, but you get the point.

I didn't mean to be unfair, I wasn't pushing one over the other. What I meant was that if the automotive industry had voluntarily gotten emissions under control, the EPA wouldn't have had to do something about it in the first place.

Diesels will always have a place. And that place is pulling heavy loads and doing hard work. In the mid/late 1990s all the way to the mid 2000's Diesels were ''cool things to have'' and don't get me wrong, Diesel engines are infact cool. But with Diesel being more expensive than ever and modern Diesels not being as economical as they used to be, I do beleive their audiance has shrunk. Less and Less people are using Diesels these days as daily drivers, I think the majority of Diesel owners are going to be mostly the labor crowd...''Construction Workers...etc...etc, And of course those of us who have Large 5th wheels and double axle trailers that need to be towed. But to be honest the 6.2L will handle pretty much any load the 6.7L will...The 6.2L may not do it as gracefully or as smoothly but it will get the job done none the less.

Now with that said...Let me say this to anyone on the fence about buying a Diesel now or in the future...Get what YOU want. Its you're hard earned money and you deserve to own and drive what you want to. If you can swing the 9,000$ price tag and extra cost for fuel...By all means get a Diesel and enjoy the hell out of it! I myself just bought a 2011 Ford F-150...Now, before this I had a 2003 Ford Ranger which I never used to its fullest capacity, So you can imagine how excessive the F-150 is for me needs. But I bought it because its what I wanted and I have ZERO buyers remorse. I suggjest you do the same. Buy what you like and don't worry about trying to reason with people why you own a 1-ton diesel if you don't need it. **** on them! I its you're money!

Thanks to those who participated, but comments like the above is exactly what I did not want happening, and it will only go downhill from here.
