DAMNED PINGING IS DRIVING ME NUTS......

Help.. Please I have aa 98 expey 5.4 eddie bauer my wife just loves and it is pinging like a coffe can full of bb's every time you touch the accelerator I've been getting an intermittent code for bank 1 too lean and bank 2 too lean I have changed the Pcv and associated hoses (rotted out) that helped with the codes for a while but now they are back constant will not go away, I can find no vacuum leaks! I am a diesel guy and my gas mechanic is on vacation, my wife loves this thing and won't drive any thing else without the use of a cattle prod, " it's red and pretty".....the 99 is exactly the same to the presets on the radio, she says "it's ugly and green they changed the whole car that year, I won't drive that ugly thing fix mine,....please"........HELP!.....PLEASE!

Did you double check the large vacuum elbow at the rear of the intake for breakage or if it fell off? It's the one that feeds the large PCV hose.

Yeah I changeg that assembly with new from Ford as it was badly deteriorated but I will recheck as it is hard to see it and could be partially disputed I guess? What do you think about EGR being stuck open? Could that cause it? Is that a common issue with 5.4?

Bank lean codes generally = O2 sensors. At this age if they haven't been done already they need done.

Yes a stuck open EGR valve can cause pinging because it raises the combustion chamber temperature. But with these engines the EGR ports tend to plug up with carbon, which is the opposite effect. It couldn't hurt to check the EGR valve for proper operation.

I will give it a look in the morning, as it's the only thing my gut is leaning to but then again when I stopped doing gas k-jetronic was state oh the art fuel injection

Actually, the purpose of the EGR is to lower the combustion chamber temp (to lower the NOX emissions). If your EGR is stuck open you should be experiencing idle issues, unless the EGR ports are plugged. Plugged EGR ports prevents EGR from flowing, which then would cause the pinging, (but you should also be throwing a P0401 code).

Pinging can also be caused by a lean mixture due to a malfunctioning MAF, fuel delivery issues, vacuum leaks (i.e, combustion air not passing through the MAF), excessive oil consumption, etc.

Your rig should also have a knock sensor.

Do you have any other DTCs or pending DTCs?

No only those two and their intermittent, but the pinging is happening any time I touch the pedal once the engine is at temp!
