lug nuts and studs...parts available for 61 F600?

Bill (ND) or others:

In trying to get the front tire/rim off of my 1961 F600, I broke off one of the studs!! The others are hard as hell to break loose.

Are these studs readily available from napa, etc.??

Also need the spring that holds the 2 drum brakes together. Part number?

Thanks

I hope you know that you've got both left hand and right hand threads. Napa probably can get replacement studs, but to me I'd want to take the kid behind the counter a part number so all they have to do is place the order. The Dorman on-line catalog lets you look at the studs live size and match your busted one. Yours is 3/4" x 16 tpi, so you'll just need to match the spline diameter, length, etc. Here's the Dorman link. Stu

Studs/nuts are listed in the catalog in the front (or rear) hub parts lists. In order to find the correct parts, the size of the brake shoes must be known.

1961 F600: The shoes could be: 14" x 2 1/2" / 15" x 3" / 16" x 2 1/2."

OOPS! Didn't know about that! So...the left hand side wheel lug nuts are taken off by turning clockwise? If so that would explain my screwup. Are the back left lugs the same rotation for removal?

Thank you

Yes, back same as the front. If you take a close look at the stud you twisted off, you'll no doubt find a letter "L" molded into the end of the stud as well as an "L" on either the face or one of the flats of the nut. The Dorman catalog has both left and right hand threaded studs/nuts. Stu

When you get the replacement installed and are ready to remount the wheel, you'll also want to study up on torque settings, and whether to lube or not to lube the stud. These subjects generate heated debate both here and on other web sites. Me, I follow the manufacturer's recommendations which is a dry stud torqued to 450-500 lbs. Others claim that oiling or use of anti-seize works for them. Below are some old threads that will give you the arguments. Stu

Great references...thank you for your help. I am reading up on the split rim issues, etc. to determine what I need to do. My tires/wheels are OK and since this truck is only for airport use (a fuel truck) I won't put very many miles on them. I took off the wheels for inspection as the truck sat on the airport for years with no use at all. The restoration is getting more involved.
