Stock Emissions Equipment 1976 F250
Hi everyone, thanks for all the help you guys have given me on my previous questions, i have another one for you guys. I was recently at my local garage getting my car inspected and i asked the mechanic if my 76 f250 would need any emissions testing. he said that i would have to pass a visual emissions test and a gas cap test . my question is, what stock emissions equipment came on the truck, and what does a gas cap test show. If anyone has any pictures they can show me i would really appreciate that too. BTW the motor in my truck is the 360. thanks again guys.

Visual test is to make sure your truck does not smoke when running and the gas cap test is just a test of teh sealing ability of the cap when suction is applied to it. If the truck smokes when you first start it up (Burns oil), put in some stop smoke and run it for 25-50 miles to help burn out the stuff in the exhaust. The gas cap will be taken of your truck and applied to the testing machine hose which will test the seal of the cap as I stated before. They just want to make sure that fumes do not get released into the air from the cap.

I do not know what the emission requirements were for a PA truck (excepting the PCV which all have), but here in CA, it would have an EGR valve and the Evaporative Emission (ev/em) system.
Ev/em: The fuel tank(s) have a round hole in the top for fuel vapor valve(s). A charcoal cannister is mounted under the hood adjacent to the alternator.
Lines route from the valve(s) to the cannister, then there's another hose that routes from a valve on the cannister to the air cleaner.
All this jazz is used with unleaded fuel. The fuel cap is non vented and has 4 'ears' instead of the 2 that a vented cap has. The fuel filler tubes are ev/em only.

What county are you in? I'd find another mechanic. I'm in PA and my 74' F-100 is exempt from emissions just like your 76' should be. I know shops that will pass anything, find one of them. The whole emissions BS came about just to suck money out of the pockets of people who own more current MY vehicles.

It all started in CA in 1961. The PCV was required in all sold new CA vehicles. Smog pumps were introduced in 1966, required in most CA vehicles. Ev/em was introduced in 1970, required on cars, F100, E100, U100's originally, then on everything by the late 1970'a. EGR introduced in 1973, another CA requirement as were Cat converters introduced in 1976, all cars had one or two, some trucks came with them initially.
CA requires a smog test on 1976 and newer vehicles except diesels (but a new law in coming that will include them). If a vehicle cannot pass smog, it cannot be registered.
There is no waiver if the parts are obsolete, it's fix it, or park it. It is illegal to drive a vehicle with expired license plate tags. If seen by the polizei, they have the legal right to impound the vehicle.
If a vehicle with expired tags is parked on the street or on private property, and the polizei see the expired tag, the have the legal right to impound the vehicle.
inre to smog testing: Y'all that don't to go thru this jazz better enjoy while you can, because Congress is discussing implementing NATIONWIDE smog tests.
Better save all those smog parts y'all removed, cuz y'all are gonna need them...sooner or later.
btw: We have no vehicle inspections here in CA. Peeps can drive their beat up junk with crappy brakes, maypop tires, loose steering and other safety defects, but CA doesn't give a ****!

Thats because CA is run by EcoNazis. Impounding a vehicle on private property for expired tags??! That is ridiculous. That's UNAMERICAN! lol In Tx, only counties that incorporate major cities have emissions testing, and then anything over 25yrs is exempt. Expired tags only get a small fine, no impounding.
But the OP shouldn't have to do any real emissions test. Just a check to see it doesn't smoke and then check the cap as Burburan said.

Only thing I can get behind is a low priced physical inspection of the vehicle to assure it is worthy to occupy public roads with other vehicles, thats it.

That won't stand up in court. Cali ever hear of the 4th ammendment of the constitution? Yeah that document that Cali lawmakers like to **** on all the time.
Maybe someday the residents of Cali will pull there head out of their rear and wake up. I know, unlikely.

One guy lost his entire Mustang collection (many were ratty parts cars). If you lived here, you mighta read about, since it made into all the local newspapers (L/A and Orange Counties).
The guys front yard resembled a trash heap, the neighbors begged him to clean up his yard, he did nothing. Someone finally turned him into the DMV.
Dozens of cars were found never to have been registered, some had no paperwork at all. A fleet of tow trucks towed the cars to the official police impound yard.
One car had been reported stolen, so the idiot was facing criminal charges as well as all the towing charges and impound fees.

Do you live in CA? Obviously not, because this law has been effect for at least 20 years.

If you could find any case law or a website with said law I would appreciate a link. State law, local law? (Can PM me if you find anything, were off topic enough )

Is there a definition for late 70s as it pertains to the bold underline reference of EVAP requirements (whether CA emissions or 49 state)?
I've accepted that my truck originally had EGR and I shall address that, but I really don't see any evidence that it ever had EVAP. To review: 1977 F-150 Factory 460, 6050GVWR, federal (49 state) emissions.
