can the number of splines in my front hubs determine what front end I have ?
I was checking to see the number of splines in my front end today so I could order new hubs. Does the number of splines also determine what fron end I have. There are 19 splines. How can I tell which front end I have? It's an 89 F250.
Easiest way is to look at pics of both axles and see which one you have. Here are a couple pics. Notice how the Dana 50 hub fills out a lot more of the wheel opening than the Dana 44.
I'm betting you have a D44. D50s and 60s have 30 and 35 spline hubs. But the easiest way to check is to look at the pumpkin. There should be a 44 or 50 cast into the back of the housing.
Edit: Just want to clarify that I'm talking about the splines on the axles.
I just took a look and I didn't see anything stampen in the pumpkin???I'll look again. Maybe I have to hit things with a wire brush to clean them up enough to see........Thanks
They stamped the later ones for sure, but not the earlier ones. I'm not sure when they started doing it. I wouldn't expect to find them on an 89 though - at least in my experience.
The chrome cover on a dana 44 front axle will be roughly 3-3.5" across.
the chrome cover on a dana 50 front axle will be roughly 4-4.5" across. Measure the diameter, it will tell you what you have.
You wont have a dana 60 front axle unless somebody swapped it in at some point, highly unlikely
