Question Help! Removed timing Gear and IP

Hello,

I removed the IP and timing gear housing thinking it would help speed up the new IP installation. I also changed the injectors, glow plugs and controller. I now have messed up timing. What can I do to get this thing static timed? I am working on a 86 f 250 with the 6.9. Beru plugs, Delphi injectors and a rebuilt IP from Pensecola Diesel.

I have not started the truck after replacing evrything for fear of damaging the pump.

Thanks

good luck--
but here is what i did , when- i didn't know- to leave the gear housing on
got to get cyl #1 (passgerside) tdc,
then check two places .
the line on the balancer,
and on mine,
looking down in the motor at the gear.
you might see on the teeth ,
perminat paint..
on my 1990 there was a brass dot between the teeth
then look at the gear you took off
see the ''y'' that ''y'' has to be in the correct tooth ,off one or two ,''is a big deal''
in order to do that,
you put the gear in the motor mark where it just comes out
count the teeth, from the ''y'' each side
you can do it

I did make a mark of the position of the alignment dowel from the old IP on the gear housing. If I install the new pump and make sure the alignment dowell is in the same position would this be close enough to static? I plan on going to a shop and have them dynamic time the IP. I just do not want to damage the new plugs and IP.

Thanks

Get a pick set. You can feel the timing mark on the cam gear to verify you did get the mark up. Just like braille.

"I just do not want to damage the new plugs and IP." Nothing to damage. Just won't run right.

I did the same thing. What a nightmare that was. I was able to see the "Y" mark on the top of the cam gear with a dental mirror and I also felt it with a dental pick like catfish suggested. Good luck. It may help to have a buddy turn the crank slowly to get it top dead center. The mark on the damper will be aligned with the mark on the plate @ TDC or 180 degrees out if my memory serves correctly.

There is no "close enough" on the gear timing. The marks have to be on the money, or it will never time right.

Also the Cam gear has 2 marks. 1 for the crank gear and 1 for the IP gear. I believe the 1 for crank is a dot, and the one for IP is a Y. I would have to double check when I got home. But if cylinder 1 is at TDC the Cam will have correct mark at top.

sdiess, try this

I bought a motor which already had the timing gear cover and gear missing. I had to figure out a way to align my marks and came up with this. Give this thread a read. It worked like a charm, and more than 6 months later she is running great.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...lacement.html?

Scroll down until you find my first post in this thread. This is the desrciption of how I did it, also check out the custom wrenches people have made to get to the bottom two bolts of the pump, in the same thread.

Good Luck!

Mac.

I want to say thank you to evryone that provided the good info. She is running and sounds good. Me and dad worked on it and our knees hurt, the chest is sore and the neck is killing us. Next time a rolling scaffold that I can lay on will be in the garage. The mark my dad made on the gear housing helped. I will have a shop dynamic time it soon ($150). I see a little white smoke during take off, I hope this will go away with the proper timing from the shop with the high doller timing tool.

Thanks again!!! You folks gave us the confidence to do this job.

I tried to find somebody to time mine a few years back and got the same answer, "if it's running good, just let it be". Mines running fine so if I can find somebody, I"ll give them the chance. BTW, I have a 1987 N/A 6.9.
