2001 F150 Fuel Tank Hoses

Hi All, I have a 2001 F150 Supercrew (V8, 5.4L, a/c, 2whl dr) and I had a fuel pump failure while out on vaction in Colorado. Broke down at night, on a weekend, in a very small town, with no Ford dealership or national auto parts chain store, & with hardly any tools. Long story short: The Good News is that we found a mom & pop auto parts store that was open & who actually had a replacement fuel pump. Changed out fuel pump & truck started & got us home to California. The bad news: Had to cut the 2 small hoses coming off the top of the gas tank (but they were pretty deteriorated anyway)to get the tank off to change the fuel pump. We replaced the 2 hoses with tubing we got at a hardware store. Problem now is that when we try and fill up the gas tank, the pump keeps clicking off. We have to barely squeeze the gas pump handle & fill the tank VERY slowly. Go to fast & the gas pump clicks off. It takes forever to fill the tank. I am wondering if the 2 hoses are the problem. I am not sure but I imagine the 2 hoses have something to do with venting the gas tank???Perhaps one hose got kinked when we raised the gas tank back under the truck. I can't find any pictures or drawings of the gas tank (in my repair manual) that shows the two hoses, and their part numbers so that I could get replcements. I'm not sue what the 2 small hoses are even for. Anyone have this problem? Is there something else that could be the cause of the problem? **Also: After reading some of the other posts here, I am wondering if my truck will pass smog(Calif) test to register the truck in July. Anyone know?

Thanks for the quick reply. I should have mentioned, we also replaced the rubber filler hose(thatgoes from the end of the filled tube at the fuel door to the top of the gas tank). The mom & pop autostore didn't have the exact same hose but the did have on that had the same bend, but was a few inches longer on both ends. We trimmed both ends until it matched the old rubber filler hose. It wasn't an exact match, but extremely close. I will check again however to see if it could have been crimped. It was dark & we were using flashlights, but that hose was/is pretty easy to see, until it dissapears right above the tank. Do you know what the 2 rubber hoses off the top of the tank are for??

I'm not sure exactly, but I think one is the return line and one is a vent line. But I could be wrong.
