I have a 91 F150 with a 300 I6, 4X4. How hard is it to install new fuel injectors? Are there any special tools involved? I'm good with tools but haven't tackled anything like this before.
BTW: I put my truck in the shop and they said that 3 of the 6 injectors are burnt to the point of not working. This is the result from some seriously raunchy gas that I got a year ago. They said that if they were going to replace 3 they might as well replace all 6 cause they could go bad too. They estimate the cost at $860.
I was hoping to save some money and do it myself. It has to be done because the truck barely runs.
I think the guy that gave you that estimate must be behind on his car or truck payments! Take off your upper intake manifold and unbolt the fuel rail and go for fit. Be sure to put in all new "O" rings. I don't know how much the injectors are but they can't be much over $50.00 each.
I had to replace all of my injectors in my 1989 F-150 302 a few years ago due to the same problem you did. I was lucky enough to find a wrecked truck at a yard that had the motor removed. I took the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator and all injectors for $250.
Since the last 300 rolled off the line almost 6 1/2 years ago, it might be fairly hard to find some low-mileage injectors. If you do find some fairly cheap, be sure to have them thoroughly cleaned before you install them.
I am one of those guys that likes to take things apart just because, and was thinking about pulling my injectors out and taking a look at them. How should I go about cleaning them up, before I re-install them?
If you want to do it right, Get some 19LB injectors from a Summitracing.com for like 225, order a adjustable fuel regulator and then you can fine tune your bigsix. I replaced mine last year. The 12lb are just not enough for the big bore and stroke of a six. Just think Ford puts 19lb injectors@40 PSI on a bore that is 4 inches and a stroke that is only 3 inches, and then on the big six they put 12lb@ 60 psi injectors with a 4 inch bore and 4 inch stroke, now does that make sense? You wont believe the power difference going with bigger injectors.
Log on to KarKraft. A few weeks ago they were selling 19# new take-offs for $90 for a set of eight. They say they only have a half dozen miles on them.
Is it possible to run 19# injectors in a 96 with the OBDII computer? I have been looking into changing out the injectors and it would make sense to upgrade now if that is possible.
P.S. I was quoted a price for replacement rebuilt stock 12# injectors for my I6 at $40.00 Canadian per injector. A local injector shop wanted $40.00 + $7.00 parts to rebuild the same.
Anyway's since you have the OBD-II I would asume you have a '96 which also means oyu have Mass-Air, if so oyu wouldn't even need to bother with an adjustable fuel regulator, you can get a custome MAF meter or chip(or both) and really see some power gain.
