ZF5 broken tailhousing / tranny mount fix; permanently

permanent fix to the dreaded zf5 trans mount ears.

i bought a ZF for close to nothin. . .the guy i bought it from broke the ears off, fixed it for a bit via welding, broke them off again and threw his hands up. . .his loss my gain. its pretty common for these ears to break, especially if motor mounts begin to get weak. its evident that its a design flaw. . .ill be usin it primarily for 4wheelin so i wanted it as stout as possible. i ground off the ole ears and ground the surface true and flat. i used a solid block of aluminum 1"x1.5"x8", then cut out two pieces of 1/4" plate to fit around the tail for extra support. i think the block would have held (especially with the support of the center "rib" on the tail itself), but i didnt want any trouble. i spent 15 bucks on material. . .i see people complaining all over the net about this but ive seen no attempts besides just welding the ears back together (stupid idea). theyre just cell phone pics but they do the trick. i dont think i can post pics so photobucket it is. enjoy.

is the photobucket not working? all I did was drill and tap it for the stock mount bolts.

I see the piece welded in, but I don't see the new holes drilled taped thru the weld

Is it tapped or is there a nut on the backside?

I had one welded today. Just one ear was broken. The guy who welded it said to be real careful when tapping it since the tap will put stress on the weld. We agreed it would be better to through bolt it with a nut and washer.

maybe welding the ear back on through bolting would be better...but then again its still not very strong regardless. theyre crispy like tortilla chips.

if I ever had any trouble I just planned to through bolt, but its held fine.

Yeah that repair looks stronger than original.
