'88 ranger transmisssion

I have an 88 2.9L auto with a bad tranny. I was wondering if Ford made more than one auto tranny for rangers? Or will any auto tranny from that year work?

I believe that your tranny is an A4LD. They also had a stick tranny but the A4ld is what you want. Just what happened to it? Might be the shift modulater valve... with out more info who knows? The auto came in 2x4 and 4x4 versions, and I doubt that they are interchangable.

I have a 2x4. The tranny acts as if its in neutral most of the time then will kick in just to cut out again.

A bad torque converter maybe?
Far cheaper than a tranny.
Heck, maybe a band adjustment will do the trick.

Did you check the fluid level with the transmission all warmed up?
I think a C4 is the model available then, and the A4LD was a bit later. If the shift indicator has an O selection, it would be an A4LD, but if it has D 2 1, it is a C4.
You can use the VIN decoder available on the site to check.
If it has 'morning sickness', and won't do anything until it is warmed up, you likely need work done, such as new internal servo and clutch seals. If it is intermittent, it could just be fluid level.

Is there an easy way to tell if its just the torque converter?

Thanks tomw. It acts up even when warm. I've also checked the fluid level too.
