Smile 1964 f100 4x4 conversion...... not frame swap....

Ive got a line on a 2wd 64 f100 with a straight axle up front. I have been wanting to do a 4wd conversion on my 66 f100 but this truck seems to be a better option. Then I can do a pro street set up on my 66.

Any way here is my thought 1964 f100 2wd. Remove the axle, use existing spring pearches. Get a set of re arched springs and install a dana 44. End up with 6 to 10 inch lift and a set of 35 boggers. and one sweet looking slick. I have the motor trans and tcase covered in a couple diff ways. so big part is steering set up and where to get the donor axle.

I would really like to keep my leaf springs up front but if this is not as easy as it would seem it sould be i have a back up plan for that as well. coil spring set up and cross member out of an 80s truck and have ttb or use 79 axle and coil set up and still doin alot of welding.

Honestly hoping to keep it simple with leaf springs and a dana 44. what year dana would make this as close to simple as i can keep it?

motor will be either a 460 with a c6 out of a 79 f150 or a efi 351 w with a aod and bog warner case. cobra computer and 24 lbs inj. got a stang and parts layin around

I am not wanting to do a frame swap because finding a swb 4x4 is hard to come by and not cheap when you do. If it really comes to that point I can handle that on my own. Dmv may not like it though.
I would really like to keep my frame.

Ford built this truck from the factory in 4 wheel drive so the parts are out there. A pre-67 Dana 44 would be the easiest as the 67 and up trucks were coil spring models. There was a running 62 factory 4X on Craigslist a guy was trying to get $500 or best offer for. Drivetrain was good but body was rough. Maybe you could find a deal like that.

I ve beat up craigslist for my area only find 2wds. and what 70s 4x4s i find are long bed. I just love the swb. Truck will see limited time on the street maybe a shine and show here and there and some winter driving in deep snow. planing on 4.56 gears limited slip or selectable locker front and rear. fair truck pulls and mud drags.

I would get my hands on a 64 shop manual if possible. That way you can get a good look at how they set things up back then. From there I would get a D44 for the front, preferably one that came out of a truck that had leafs under the front end. If you want to do a lift your going to have to fab some parts anyway, but back then everything was pretty simple. It will be some work with the welder, but should be pretty straightforward.

Myself, if you want to turn big tires in the mud and do some pulling I would stay away from the TTB crap from the 80s. Run a straight axle. Will be the easiest to build too.

yes I was thinking ttb as back up cause if im fabbin might as well be diffrent. I could do it and with the crossmember swap wouldnt be that bad. But im wanting to stay solid axle. Leaf springs would be real easy with the right axle. Was kinda thinking maybe dana 60s would be nice but wanna stay light. thats why im leaning towards the 351w set up. The more i look the more i think i may just get the coil brakets and go with a 70s coil set up. only a couple of brakets just hoping somebody has done this. Most people swap frames and that is a last resort for me, got a line on a 90 f150 short bed cheap to so thousands of options. like the rugged leafsprings and parts that dont break.

Yeah, a D60 up front be really nice if you wanted to throw alot of power at it. Honestly, what is the weight difference between a 60 and a 44?

I like the idea of the leafs up front. Simple, strong, easy to work on.

I know there are a few guys with 4WDs on this forum. Maybe a few of them can throw some pics up for you to look at. Give you good jump off point.

heres one of a front axle on a 65 f100 4x4..

I also have a 63f250 4x4 but dont have any good pics of the front axle assembly. Basiclly looks the same as the 65. If you want a pic of steering assembly side of the 65 let me know sgt mole.

Look at my build pics down in projects. There may be enough pics there to fit what you are looking for. Let me know.

The F100 frame will not handle powered front axle off road and maybe not on road with that much power. The frame on Buzz44 4wd is a F350 or f500 frame.

You got me to thinking. I went out and looked at the two frames this am. It does look like at least the front half or 2/3 of the 65 f100 4x4 frame is the same as the F250 4x4. If it were me I would look for a running 4x4 frame to mount his body onto. Just my 2 cents.
