I want to install a set of Bassani equal length shorties on my '89 F-250 4x4. My engine has the air injection ports to each cylinder on the stock exhaust manifolds. I have been unable to find a set of headers to accomadate these air injection ports... I've been told that I will have to remove the pump and all plumbing if I want to add headers... I know that I will need a shorter serpentine belt, no problem. What about the cat plumbing? Will the cat over heat? Will I need to come up with an EGR block-off plate? How do you go about making the "check engine" light go out when the ERG is unplugged? Are there other problems that I may encounter that I have over looked? Will this modification effect the computer?... Any advice would certainly be helpful. The headers have been shipped, and are on their way...
I performed this type of surgery on my '89 F150. I had a 5.8L in it, and I aquired a free set of headers. I did not, however, have the air injection above EACH port. I had the EGR entering on the passanger side, and a port and valving leaving the passanger side manifold. I said goodbye to all of this. I took the EGR valve off the intake, and twisted the pipe off the manifold. Then, I welded a bolt in the pipe to cap it off. That took care of that. As for the pump, Ford motorsport makes an idler pulley that will bolt in place of the pump. It's around $90, and I belive you ccan find it in Jeg's. Now that is done. All that is left is the pipe running between the heads at the back of the engine. This can prove to be a pain in the ***. Getting it off is by far the worst part. Oncew I had it off, I again twisted off the rotting tubes, ground them flush, and welded them shut. I then bolted them (the welded fittings) back onto the head. If you do not do this, you will have one of tyhe worst sounding exhaust leaks in the world, right under your hood. By the time my headers were on, the EPA probably could have sentenced my to a Chinese Labor camp for life. I really stripped that thing. Before you do all of this, you might want to look for another manufacturer of headers. Did you try Edelbrock? They make a ton of emissions-legal headers. Speaking from experience, I would advise against removing all the emissions stuff from your Ford. Good luck!!
I really don't wish to disturb any of the anti-pollution devices on my 5.8 if I don't have to. I do wish to add a pair of equal length shorties though. I have searched the internet, and have asked everyone I can think of, and I cannot find a set with air injection ports. Surely someone out there has had success addressing the same issues I'm facing. I don't think that this engine set-up is a one of a kind... Does anyone make a set of equal length shorties for this engine?... Help!
