Edelbrock 1406 carb questions

Hi Guys,

I need to know exactly which rods and jets are stock in this carb, both primaries and secondaries, so I can get my beast back on the road.

Or: Which rods and jets will give me the most power with the best gas mileage?

F250 with a built 390. Thing is, I have no idea what cam, etc. Bought it from a guy on craigslist and he had no idea either... he never asked when he bought it!

The carb is on it now, and was rejetted and set up for the 428 that was in the truck. All I know about the rebuild was that they installed the largest jets available, and it worked great on the 428.

On the 390 I can't get it adjusted. It's too rich, no matter how far I turn it down. I'm usually pretty good at tweaking adjustments, but this just isn't working.

So, give me some ideas guys, please. I need a starting point!

More specs: Edelbrock RPM intake. 3" Tri-Y headers. Electric choke. Yes, the carb is on a spacer, and yes, I've checked for vacuum leaks, and have all the hoses right.

4x4 with manual trans.

Notes: Really hard to start cold or hot. Runs a bit rough. It's got tons of power, and feels like it will have more if I can get it all adjusted right.

You can download the manual straight from Edelbrock website. Lot of good info and directions. A complete set of metering rods, springs etc. runs under $50 if I remember right.

Ditto, or search ebay, sometimes you can find the Eddy strip kits for around $30-35.

and i believe that the instructions will tell you what the factory jets and rods are so if you wanted to change it back and then start tuning. they are good instructions and there is a pretty handy chart and they are fairly simple carbs. It is well worth buying the little kit (although i think my kit might have come with directions now that i think about it, its been a few years)
