Technically, any modification other than factory stock is illegal to do.

Now for what sounds good and you can probably get away with.. Im sure you can do a search to find a thread about it. It has been talked about over and over again.

I have used the Walker Turbo Hemi muffler in the past as a stock replacement and they lasted the life of the three trucks they were installed on. Quiet at idle but sounded nice at full tilt. Glass packs are a "no no" in the peoples republic of Mass and some inspectors will flunk anything that doesn't look stock but if you keep the pipes in the stock location all is usually OK. Upgrading to 2.5 will help it breathe as long as the cat is good.

I have a Gibson cat back stainless steel exhaust with dual outlets. It sounds pretty good too, but not so much that it is annoying on the highway. People notice the sound and think it is real duals.

Well I think first off you need to find out what is legal where you live. If your options are open check out the exhuast threads and see what looks and sounds good to you. Alot of them have sound/video clips in them. Also BEST and CHEAP never go together, especially on exhaust.

If you want an inexpensive exhaust that will be sound a little better get a long glasspack and dump it over the rear axle. You don't want you I6 to be too loud or it won't sound so great. You could also substitute the glasspack for a turbo muffler from Dynomax.

I have Magnaflow on mine and really like it, but its not exactly inexpensive.

on the 92 f150 5.0l i had i cut the second cat/muffler of and put a 24" cherrybomb glasspack and side exit infront of rear wheel and it wasnt really that loud, couldnt tell a difference from in the cab. now my 95 5.8l the po replaced just the muffler with the same cherrybomb and left the single tailpipe out behind te rear tire an its louder then my 92 without the cat.. i dont know why, maybe the difference between the 5.0 and 5.8?
