You don't HAVE to but it makes accessing the hardware a lot easier. Sometimes taking the clamp free and shifting the battery back in the tray is enough.
Why don't you get the headlights without the trim? If you've got a 87-9 Bronco/F-series there were two grilles and two headlights, Chrome and Black and Chrome trimmed and not chrome trimmed. I personally want to find the black grille and regular headlights.
You need to go to a pick and pull and get a set without chrome trim. My 89 has the chrome trimmed headlights and a ugly aftermarket grill. I want to get a black grille/headlight assembly from a junkyard for it.
