When are you doing your first oil change? I am working on getting the recommended 1000 miles on the truck before towing and was wondering if I should do an oil change at that time. Then I will have fresh synthetic oil for the towing season. Thoughts?

 

1000 should be good, definitely get that break in oil out before towing. I actually did mine at 1600 miles but I had to make an emergency run to Pittsburgh so I had no choice. Changed it while I was there before returning.

 

Thanks jimmy that is what I was thinking. Are you running the M/C oil or something else?

 

I don't think that anyone still uses special "Break in" Oil in engines anymore.

 

Oil don't have to be special to be break in oil, it just has to be in the eng. while it is breaking in! I put penzoil 5w30 full syn, only because no one had motorcraft full syn 5w30, or the syn blend! The local Ford dealers must have sold a lot of trucks recently up there! Next change I will go back to MC.

 

I read on another forum that they were discontinuing the FL-2055 oil filter.That's a bummer I prefered the larger capacity over the FL-500.

 

I just broke the 1000 mile point and I was thinking about getting it changed. My dealer said do the first one at 3000. I am torn. I don't get the oil filter change. They added the bigger one just after release. Shipped all the motors with the fl-500 but say to replace it with a fl-2055. Now are discontinuing it.

 

Not sure on this filter thing either, but i would never wait to 3000 miles for the first/initial oil change! To each his own but not with my engine.

 

Did mine at 700 miles and have 2300 miles now. At the time of purchase Ford was putting inserts in owner's manuals to switch to FL2055. Now it is going back to the smaller filter. I posted about this issue on another forum. The 2055 is a larger filter and works just fine. The parts manager at my dealer showed me some information on fmcdealer.com website and he even made some calls about this. There were some customer satisfaction issues regarding size and difficulty of installing the 2055 and the larger diameter increased the risk for belt contact. The engineers feel the smaller filter will be just fine without these issues. I checked mine and the belt is not rubbing on it so i'll keep the 2055 on until I'm due again.

Wonder if the fl2055 will still be offered as a choice? I am heading in tonight at 1200 miles to get it changed. The dealer gave me one free change so I will use that. I will be towing my travel trailer next week and would like the fresh oil for towing season anyways.

I'm torn on this too. I'm sure there's going to be some extra "crud" in the first oil from break in etc... And while I agree that's there's no such thing as break-in oil, I'm sure there is some moly assembly lube in there that might be worth leaving alone for a while. I don't think there's necessarily a wrong answer to the question, just whatever seems like the right time. I'll probably do mine somewhere around 1500.

 

I have always done my first oil change at about 500 miles. Knowing Ford doesn't use anything special from the factory for oil, there is no concern changing it early. When you change it is purely something of personal preference.

I'm confident that if you were to compare engine life for a vehicle where the owner did the first oil change at 500 miles vs one that was changed whatever the factory recommended mileage is. That you will not find any significant differences in overall engine life or number of engine related issues. Tons of money is spent by Ford in evaluation and testing to determine safe change intervals. And by safe, I mean one's that reduce THEIR warranty risks.

No matter what you do, you'll be just fine.

 

Here's anoter question. I had my first free oil change done at my dealer last night at 1100 miles. There price for oil changes are $30.58 out the door with every 5th free. They use the Motorcraft 5w-30 semisynthetic. I usually do all my own oil changes. At this price should I even bother? Normally I use Amsoil. But at this price I could have my changes done more often and still be money ahead? What to do?

 

Use Motorcraft oil and filters.
