Turbo and CAC tube insulating

A few questions:

Aside from engine compartment heat reduction, what other benefits are there to insulating you turbo with one of those turbo socks?

I know the stock IC, CAC tubes and elbow flow sufficiently for a mildly tuned engine. Heat transfer into the CAC system is obvious since the tubes and elbow are aluminum. I was looking for something and came across a CFM+ intake elbow that was a composite and the product claims insinuated that because of its construction, it reduced intake temps. Which is a bit out there, since the tubes feeding it are aluminum....Has anyone ever thought of insulating the tubes with the insulating tapes they use for wrapping the exhaust?

Looking for some answers

Thanks
Joe

I guess I'm a little confused toward what your trying to accomplish. Are you talking about insulating the CAC tubes or the exhaust pipe? And on the OEM set-up...isn't the exhaust wrapped from the turbo down to just short of the kitty??

With what you have, and what you use it for, you'd be wasting your time and money.

I was talking about wrapping the exhaust AND the CAC tubes with the same material. My exhaust is not stock. It is a BANKS 4" turbo back so it is bare SS.

William04x,

wondering why it would have NO advantages whatsoever......can you explain.

My early 2003 came with the cac tube wrapped from the factory. It looked ugly so I tore it off.

Wrapping the turbo or exhaust is intended to keep the heat energy in the wrapped components, helping to make them more efficient. The gains are slim at best with a stock turbo and basic exhaust. That's why I said it would be a waste. I didn't post there would be NO advantages. Earlier model 6.0's had some wrap on the DP that started past the turbo. I believe the larger benefit from that was to keep the passenger floorboard cooler, instead of improving performance.

Same goes for the CAC tubes, except you're trying to keep the cold side cool(reflecting ambient heat). Wrapping the hot side would be counter productive IMO.

By all means though, wrap away, and post back your results.

The early 03 has wrap on the turbo downpipe and a black fibrous wrap on the cac tube.
