I like to check the temps of my wheel bearings before taking a long trip. Truck and trailer. I once discovered a trailer wheel bearing going bad by taking a temp reading with my IR gun. Just another idea to add to the other things the guys have been saying....
I do the same with an IR gun, check tire and bearing temps at fuel stops. They can also be used to find a dead cylinder if an injector goes out.
I carry a spare injector, alternator, belt, and starter among other things.
Is your sig current? I would recommend a chip with a towing tune. You can't begin to understand the difference a good tune makes on our trucks. The driveablity and smoothness is so nice. I loose my mind riding in a stock truck. The stock tuning is so loud and erratic!

Plus you will see a slight mileage increase!
The sig is current; the truck is set up to accept a tune pretty easily in that I have the 5" exhaust, air-raid intake and some basic gauges, all done by previous owner amazingly he ran out of coin and had to trade in the truck and his mustang for a Focus last year when I was looking......as soon as I saw the listing for the rig I was on the phone ready to deal.
Like I said I'm not 100% sold on more power (yet), more preventative maint. I would love to eventually insall a DP with some basic tunes, not sure if that is this year or next.
Some of the suggestions of what to bring are perfect for me, just need to gather some things (CPS etc.), I already stocked the truck with some of Guzzles walk-throughs on the CPS etc.
From a personal standpoint, I'm prety handy when it comes to residential things (wife and I built our own log cabin etc.) but this rig is the first vehicle I really wanted to work on myself other than basic stuff. So I'm still accumulating the tools and ***** to wrench on it myself.
