2002-F250, 7.3
Have had trouble for about 6 months with truck lossing power, dying out, check engine light will come on, sometimes will blow out white puff smoke. Will not do it on short 10 - 15 mile trips but when on the road for hours at time is when this starts. Have replaced camshaft sensor and changed fuel filter twice. Will run good for awhile then problem starts again. Was at Ford delearship for 3 days then they guoted $2000, took to another diesel shop and they couldn't figure it out either. Shop would leave truck running four hours at a time & it would run the whole time sometimes & others it would die but restart. Any ideas?

You need to read your fault codes before you can figure out the problem..If you get a P1316 code, it could be the famous under the valve cover connector/s are becoming loose..acommon problem.. Does the engine run rough when your check engine light is on?... here is a link for more info and how to fix it .. no parts.. all labor..

I had a 97, good truck. IF your under cover harnesses are burnt up you can smell them on the passenger side through the oil fill cap hole. The drivers side you just have to eliminate it down to that. The first symptom is that it is harder to start in the cold because the glow plugs usually aren't working where the harnesses are messed up. 99% of the time, a bad glow plug is pulling too many amps and burns the harness up as a side effect, it isn't because of your injectors, they are just affected. The Super Duty valve cover gaskets and under cover harnesses are a big improvement over the 98 and down ones like mine was, but they do have problems, just not as often as mine did
BUT, don't despair, it is FAR from gauranteed that is what your problem is. On the back of the high pressure oil resevoir (what the fuel filter is mounted too), and on the drivers side of the filter can and down from it is the Injector Pressure Regulator. It has a two wire connector on it with a metal bale. The wires get fuel on them from the filter being changed and the insulation turns to mush and shrinks. If these wires short to each other you will have no fuel. Often times there is NO rhyme or reason to this problem though, just have to hit the "right" bump or something. Anyway, it takes more time to pop the hood and climb up than it does to check these wires. Worth a look, and you can see them fine, don't have to take anything apart.
