2wd convert to 4wd?

The 77-79's, are the frames the same? So I would just have to fab up some leaf spring hangers and slam a front axles housing in it and it'll be fine right?
I have a 78 4wd at the shop right now, but I'm not going there and I need to know today so I can go buy these axle housings.

Hello

Why are you going that way? Is the frame no good on it? Is it a 4 speed? More details on the trucks would be awesome

I have a 1978 f250 and I'm taken the parts off a 2wd 1979 f150. I can see lots of fabbing up. Transfer case, hole in cab.

I would buy a 4x4 if you want one rather then trying to convert, becouse they usually can be had fairly cheap where I live. Plus they are complete.

Unless I wanted some crazy suspension, and the stuff that never came on them anyways. Then maybe I would consider converting. Other wise its a lot of work to end up with a stockish truck.

Wild=Convert Mild=Buy a 4x4

I don't think the frames are the same anyway.... some difference in the front crossmember I think.

Not positive but that's what I've heard tossed around.

The F100s and 150s had coil sprung front ends, are you talking about F250s? If so, there are some frame differences in the pre '77.5 and the 78-'79s

The one at my shop is a customers truck.. I found a 78 250 2wd ex-cab, and I want to put a Cummins in it.. But I would like it to be 4wd, but this 2wd truck is SOO clean and cheap!

The 4x4 frame is significantly different than the 2wd frame. The big difference is where the crossmember that crosses under the engine is located. The engine towers are also completely different. Steering boxes are located in different places.

None if that matters much, bc if I put a Cummins in it I need to chop the cross member anyways. I am more or less concerned with the frame rails for the spring hangers connect in the front.

Its not the hardest thing in the world, as long as you can weld and come up with a plan you can do it. Find a donor truck that is beyond repair body wise and swap cabs if the one you are looking at is that clean, while you are cleaning up the 4x chassis you can drive the 2wd!
