Question 1949 F6 254 Flathead six overdrive?

Hi, I am fairly new in terms of posts. I have had the pleasure of meeting Stu. He helped me out with the wheel issues. Now, I am going to open a (new?) can of worms regarding my truck. It currently has the syncronized version of the 4-speed. This has probably been asked before, but I could not find it anywhere. I was wordering if there is a stock overdrive Ford transmission of any year that will bolt up to my 254?

Thanks, Randy

The T5 from an S10 is a popular swap with flathead v8's, and should work similar to what you have.

Umm Havi, he's got an F-6....don't think the T-5 is gonna work for that! LOL

I think some of the F-7 and F-8's had 5 speeds behind the big 337 V8's. Don't know if they were OD or not.......or if they would bolt up. Do you know what the rear gear ratio is? These old trucks were geared to haul a load, not really for speed.....

Good point, it might be a bit heavy for the T5. And so the answer is no. The 5sp in the F7/8 are different, as they bolt up to the 337cid only.

Your best bet is to find a two speed rear axle. There were different ratio two speeds depending on truck size. You might be able to get a two speed from an F-5 and get better ratios. There is a fairly high speed single speed axle that was used under the F-4s. The shop manual has a very nice table of rear axle ratios, tire sizes, etc. Check this out then go looking for the axle you want.

Are you going to be hauling loads at all with this? That big six has lots of torque but you're moving an awful lot of truck, with the aerodynamics of a brick.
